Depends on who he's matched up with...but in general, yes, I think he plays good enough defense to warrant playing time in the playoffs.

i think he's a scrapper... which makes up for his below average D. i say its below average mostly because of his size. if he was bigger he'd be straight

He puts a lot of effort in defence, i'd say, yes his full court pressure and scrappy play, does make up for average defence.

He needs to work on his shot blocking.

his physical attributes will never allow him to be an effective pick and roll defender in this pick and roll league
but he hustles after it and has causes some teams to get into their offense late by ballhawking and tonight he causes a key turnover in the final minute

It's abysmal, but he gets a few hustle plays. It's not from a lack of effort, either. It's too bad there's no one to protect him in the second unit.

Patty cannot play a lick of real defense. He's a hustle guy who disrupts inbounds plays and annoys the ball handler, but otherwise he's too small to bother anyone.

While his defense has improved a mile since last season

If / when we play OKC the Mills v Reggie Jackson match up worries me and i'd consider cojo

Otherwise he should play vs any other playoff team backup

I like the effort. The results might not always be there, but he could just mail it in (ie: RMJ/Neal) and he does not. Sometimes it pays off. Very happy with Patty as our backup PG.

I'm assuming Pop will start Duncan and Splitter, pull Splitter after 7 minutes and have him play with the bench from the 2 minute mark of the 1st through the 8 minute mark of the 2nd when Tim reenters the game. He did that against GSW and Miami. Keeps a rim protector and a rebounder on the floor at all times and allows the Spurs to go small with the 2nd unit (with Leonard) if needed.

Mills should be better in that instance. I still get the feeling that Joseph will get burn against OKC ,should we meet them, with Jackson's recent history of torching us.

It's nothing special. Definitely an improvement from last season though. If Parker, being the horrid defender that he is, can get minutes in the playoffs, then so can Patty.

Yes, I 'm happy with him as a backup SG but not PG. The Spurs FO thinks they can convert SG's to PG but it just doesn't work like that. It's not working with Patty, it didn't work with Neal and it failed with Hills. One f these days, I'm optimistic the FO will get a clue and actually sign a backup PG.

If some day I need a bodyguard I would pick Patty over Tony and Cojo

The Spurs don't want a "true/classical" PG. Never did. The last one they had was Jacque Vaughn, and he played mostly because of his defense (and because Parker played nearly 40mpg).

In the system, the PG position is run by a scorer (which is what Parker mostly is), with good enough handles to safely bring the ball up and execute plays. Unlike Neal or RMJ (both of which had below average/ ty handles), Patty can fill that role. Hill didn't quite work because he wasn't really a scorer.

Lol! He will get his chance first as a backup bodyguard but he needs to be more aggressive, Pop could be an elite protector...POPINATOR!

Actually, TJ Ford was more of a scorer than a classical PG (averaged double-digit scoring in his better years). We obviously had him at the tail end, and he was more of a floor general for us on his extremely short stint (incredibly he only played 14 games for the Spurs. It sure felt like it was more).

Really miss Ford tbh. I honestly think he would've been a difference maker against OKC that year.

Mills is 11th on the Spurs in DRtg at 104, so third stringer defense, except …
Joseph is 12th and Parker is 17th.

The missed Ford also had a DRtg of 104 his last year.

How is Parker 17th on the Spurs when there are only 15 roster spots on an NBA team?
