ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman broke his left ankle early in the second quarter of Friday night's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams and will be sidelined three to four months.

Grossman, who played in only three games last season before being shelved by a right knee injury, was hurt with 11:08 to go in the half on a 4-yard completion to Darnell Sanders. After being flushed out of the pocket by Jeremy Loyd and Trev Faulk and getting spun around by Faulk, he got back to his feet.

While limping, Grossman signaled for a trainer. He then sat down and grabbed his left knee in pain, and slammed his helmet on the cart before being taken off the field.

The Bears used four quarterbacks last year and have used at least three in six of seven seasons. They could be stuck in a similar predicament this year given that backup Chad Hutchinson is unproven.

General manager Jerry Angelo said in the offseason that he was committed to having a veteran backup on board, but the team passed on Kurt Warner, Brad Johnson and Jay Fiedler.

Grossman was 6-for-11 for 52 yards before leaving the scoreless game. He was replaced by Hutchinson, who led the Bears to their only first-half score on the same drive.

Lovie's got some real problems, now. Chicago's other QB options are Hutch, rookie Kyle Orton, Ryan Dinwiddie, and Kurt Kittner.

The Bears have gotta be the most cursed in team in the NFL....they're literally dead if not circling the drains....Grossman is out pretty much for the year and Cedric Benson is still a spectator and unsigned.

This team will go down the crapper quick

They just signed Jeff Blake. I think Orton's chances just got better to make the team, the odd man out, IMO, is Hutchinson who sucks anyway.

Like I said Orton played good in the pre-season games, I wouldn't be suprised if he is the QB.

Orton has llooked good and it might not be a stretch to see him finish this thing maybe if things go bad for Hutchinson and Blake

    Jeff Blake??

damn I feel for the Bears fans, their so loyal and they've got the worst luck with their team always.

Man, I remember thinking in '01 that the Bears were going to be the next great team in pro football. They cut like every high priced older guy on the roster after a six win 2000 season and finished 13-3 in '01.

Remember the 49ers game with Brown's INT return in OT after rallying from 14 down in the fourth? TO freaked out seeing Urlacher coming and ran his route short setting up the pick.

Then they followed up the next week against the Browns scoring two TD's in the final minute, capped off by the Hail Mary to get the game to OT, where Brown ran in another INT for the win?

    Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Poor Bears.

Team says surgery went well; return uncertain

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2135296

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Rex Grossman's ankle surgery Monday "went well," though general manager Jerry Angelo isn't sure when the quarterback will return.

The Bears initially said Grossman would miss three to four months after being injured in Friday's preseason game at St. Louis. Angelo backed away from that slightly, saying they'll have a better idea after the medical staff meets on Tuesday.

The Chicago Tribune reported Grossman could go on injured reserve after Monday's surgery revealed an injury to his fibula as well as the ankle. Being put on injured reserve would end Grossman's season.

"I know a lot's being said about Rex, the eulogy of the team given that Rex is out," Angelo told reporters Monday night. "I want to make sure our fans know that we're not here lamenting over Rex Grossman. It's unfortunate. We all feel bad about it. We have a contingency plan. The only thing I'm disappointed in is we're having to get to the contingency plan.

"We have a lot of confidence in our quarterbacks and [offensive coordinator] Ron Turner."

Chad Hutchinson is now the starter, with rookie Kyle Orton and veteran Jeff Blake backing him up. The Bears signed Blake, a former All-Pro, to a one-year contract on Monday.

Grossman broke his ankle in the second quarter Friday, when the Rams' Trev Faulk twisted him to the turf. The third-year pro tried to walk off the field but crumbled to the turf in pain.

It was his second major injury in as many seasons. Grossman tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the third game last year -- one of many injuries for the Bears on their way to a 5-11 record.

In two preseason games, Grossman completed 11 of 23 passes for 129 yards.
