You'd think with a name like the Heat they'd be able to handle it.

Understanding the Correlation Between Leg Cramps and Dehydration

There are a number of causes for leg cramps; overexertion, strain and medications, such as statins and steroids, can cause leg cramps. One of the more common causes for leg cramps is dehydration; if you are not taking a medication with leg cramps as a side effect, your cramps are most likely from dehydration.

How does dehydration cause leg cramps?

Dehydration causes leg cramps in two different ways. If you are dehydrated, chances are good you are also suffering from an electrolyte imbalance, which can cause cramps. The lack of fluid in your muscles is another dehydration-related cause of leg cramps.

    What is an electrolyte imbalance?

An electrolyte imbalance occurs when the levels of sodium, calcium and potassium in your body are too high or too low; because sodium is part of sweat, it is very common for electrolyte imbalance to accompany dehydration. This risk increases when your dehydration is due to overexertion or exercise.

What is the most effective way to treat dehydration?

Your leg cramps will end when you treat your dehydration. Because your body's electrolytes are probably also depleted, make sure to get an adequate electrolyte intake while you rehydrate yourself. There are many formulas on the market aimed at athletes that contain a proper balance of sodium, potassium and calcium.

Can persistent leg cramps be a sign of something more serious?

In rare cases, chronic leg cramps are a sign of deep vein thrombosis, a potentially fatal blood clot disorder. If you are properly hydrated and do not have another cause of your cramps such as medication or muscle fatigue, see your doctor to rule out a serious condition.

Leg cramps are usually treated easily and safely by hydrating yourself. Since keeping yourself hydrated is safe, quick and has no side effects, there is no reason not to make it your first step in treating leg cramps.

Leg cramps are pretty common in that heat, combined with Miami's over-reliance on James all year, tbh..we saw how bad they are when he went out..

Does the NBA have any rules around IVs / shots during games? I know the NFL has limits on getting shots during games.
