There will never be a Niner wide receiver better than Jerry Rice or a Cleveland Brown running back (he was actually a fullback-different deal back then) better than Jim Brown. So what current players are the best ever at their position for their team.

    Calvin Johnson WR Lions
    Adrian Peterson RB Vikings
    Russell Wilson QB Seahawks
    Richard Sherman CB Seahawks
Frank Gore RB Niners (sorry Roger)
    Tom Brady QB Pats
Peyton Manning Colts....gonna make an exception here. He's obviously not gonna surpass Elway as a Bronco.
Phillip Rivers QB Chargers (sorry Dan)
    Drew Brees QB Saints
    Larry Fitzgerald WR Cards

    There are more, who?

    Guard - Jahri Evans

Marques Colston is debatable since he played with Brees his entire career while Joe Horn had broken previous records while having Aaron Brooks as his QB. Personally I think Horn was better in his prime.

Graham will eventually be the Saints best TE ever if he's already not. Hobby Brenner, Wesley Walls, and Jeremy Shockey weren't as impactful as Saints.

I'm not convinced Rivers is better than Fouts. Actually he's not. I think Fouts will still go down as the better QB.

Fouts > Rivers.... the only reason Fouts never won a ring is because ownership cheaped out and let all the defensive talent walk and the front office failed to replace them....

Possibilities from the Chargers but I'm young I might not know some of the older players not at skill positions.

    Nick Hardwick C

    Eric Weddle FS

Antonio Gates TE (unless people who saw Winslow think Winslow is better)

Those are the only candidates right now besides Rivers.

I'd say Fouts was better than Philip if only just. Fouts and the Chargers would've won a superbowl if it wasn't for the freezer bowl.

Jimmy Graham is the best Saint TE and Colston hasn't surpassed Joe Horn, in my opinion. I agree Rivers vs Fouts is close.

No way I'd ever knock Dan Fouts, if he'd had even a good defense he's winning SB's. But....his stats are a bit inflated because of that defense. He was constantly playing catch up, which obviouisly means pass pass and pass. Now add the fact he had the best set of receivers we've ever seen on the same team. Two HOFer and John Jefferson who was incredible.

Dude, how in the could Andrew Luck be in a conversation with John Unitas and Peyton Manning? No way in he belongs. The Seahawks haven't had anyone at QB in franchise history, what Jim Zorn, Dave Kreig, Matt Hasslebeck?

Why don't you move along, ok?

Kellen Winslow is in any discussion of the best ever TE. Charlie Joiner left the game as the leagues all time leading receiver. Still on the All Time lists for rec/yards, Then there was the amazing John Jefferson** this guy was something else. Then he got funky wanted more $$$$$$$$$ got traded to the Packers (they had James Lofton) and....kaplunk!

Keep in mind Marshall Faulk played a big part in that GSOT, he wasn't a receiver.

** after Jefferson was traded, in stepped Wes Chandler who was just as..wow!

As far as Unitas vs Manning goes, now this...era...thing plays a big part, not unlike Brown back then. I can see where a case can be made for Unitas, if we wanna play "in his era". But.....Unitas never came remotely close to facing the kind of athletes Manning faces, which can also be said about Jim Brown. I'd never disrepect those true studs like Unitas/Brown I just see a guy who has done what Peyton Manning against that level of compe ion....................

Unitas did have the first "great" TE in John Mackey, the best receiver in the league in Ray Berry and histories first "great" receiving running back in Lenny Moore***. All of them in the HOF.

*** would be a receiver today.

If you're going to discuss greatest tight ends you almost have to split the category to "pre Shannon sharpe" or "post Shannon sharpe" because before him that position changed so much after him.

Actually, it was Kellen Winslow Sr. who really changed the position, not Sharpe....

I've had this debate before too...I don't totally disagree with you but after Sharpe came in, then Gonzalez came in, then every other tight end looked the same as those two. There was a long gap between Winslow and Sharpe where tight ends were still big blockers mostly other than the occasional semi fast white guy.

Still, without Winslow having WR-esque talent and Coryell recognizing it, tight ends like Sharpe, Gonzalez, Gates, Graham, etc. never exist.... Winslow was the prototype for what was to come....

I'm not sure they would have never existed but Winslow was certainly that type well before Sharpe.

Jesus, I just looked up Winslows numbers and didn't realize what a fing beast he was. Had he played for as long as Sharpe or Gonzalez he would have crushed.

    Jason Witten TE Cowboys

And if Dez can keep it up, I can see him taking over as top WR.

Also, if Romo can get that elusive championship, he already has the stats for QB. And yes, both of those are big IFs.

Dez over Irvin? I don't see that happening. Never know I suppose but those are some pretty big shoes to fill.
