I believe it's coming sooner than later..nearly every region is in conflict or multiple conflicts at the moment.
USA - dividing ourselves over a variety of topics. Foreign policy on several topics continues to be an issue.
Middle East - ISIS is becoming a bigger issue, Iraq is unstable, and Afghanistan is still a work in progress. Countries like Egypt and Lebanon are unstable, and the USA will always claim "protection of interests" if pops off in one of those countries.
Russia - Putin doesn't give a about the US or NATO and is expanding territory. The US recently intercepted Russian aircraft near Alaskan airspace, and it's clear Russia is testing it's borders.
China - owns the keys to the White House so to speak, and continues to get more powerful. Closing the gap on tech, and boasts the smartest students in the world. 3:1 ratio of people vs the US. Fighting with Japan and the Koreas over islands in the South China Sea. They have intercepted US aircraft recently in an act the White House called "provocative". China called it "routine".
North Korea - like Putin, Kim Jong Un can give a less about the US or Nato. He's a ticking time bomb IMO. Tension with South Korea will never cease, one of these days their "wargames" will cause all out war.

Not World War 3. But the "end" is near. USA/UK will be the last world powers to fall. China might be on its way but it will never get there. It is prophecy.

You're sleeping on China, they pose the largest long term threat to the US. The USA is in serious debt w/ them, and they continue to get richer with our reliance on cheap goods and electronics.
Their students are getting smarter, while our kids get better at using the cell phone China manufactured. Their sense of pride and loyalty to their country is unmatched, while we get closer to civil war at home by the day.
With a 3:1 ratio, and the United States clear weakness to guerilla warfare, we would have no chance of defeating China on the ground short of nuking them to .

America is the new Rome. This is history simply repeating itself with war being the constant.
Rome's downfall was expanding to the point where defense was impossible. We have remained nearly the exact same for 300 years, but insist on being Team America World Police. America had enough trouble staging war on two fronts, and the rest of the world knows we aren't trying to take on more battles. Putin is a prime example of playing the chess game with the West.

Watch the news from the 70 and 80's, it's the same then as it is now. Only difference is the plethora of 24/7 news channels covering everything and anything of interest. The connected world is too ingrained in technology to really create another actual world war.
