the usual thing is to point to real problems like unemployment, underemployment, and long-term unemployed folks who drop off the unemployment rolls -- and blame those on whomever the sitting president is. this tactic is rhetorically appealing but like the OP misses the mark: the president doesn't, indeed can't control broad economic trends like unemployment and labor force participation.
