Potential employers and placement centers are poised to offer assistance

Web Posted: 09/03/2005 12:00 AM CDT

    Express-News Business Writer

Susan Manns, a veteran of Hurricane Allen in 1980, wants to hire a storm victim even though she doesn't need more employees.

"I just want to help someone who's been displaced get back on their feet," said Manns, owner of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory on the River Walk. "Busy minds and busy hands help in healing."

Cathy Ferdinand, a former insurance claims analyst from just outside New Orleans, wants to land a job in San Antonio, where she and her 10-year-old daughter arrived early Friday.

"I have come to the conclusion that there is no more New Orleans," she said. "San Antonio is going to be my new home now. I have to find a job or find a way to start supporting me and my child."

Like Manns, scores of local business owners and employment agencies are helping evacuees find jobs in an effort to bring some sense of normalcy back into their lives.

To help evacuees such as Ferdinand, more than 100 San Antonio employers are offering work as truck drivers, medical office receptionists, construction workers, retail sales associates, meatpackers, welders, roofers, cooks, network administrators, systems analysts and nurses.

Alamo WorkSource, a state work force development and training program, will open a career center Tuesday morning at KellyUSA, communications coordinator Eva Esquivel said.

The center will offer job placement assistance and help in filing unemployment claims. "We want to give these people jobs," she said. "And we want to give these people hope."

WOAI radio is maintaining a list of employers offering to hire evacuees on its Web site. On Wednesday, radio host Jeff Bolton began using his daily talk show to help connect employers with evacuees searching for work. "There are so many people out there saying we absolutely will hire displaced people," Bolton said.

And many evacuees are more than ready to take on those jobs. "A lot of them are ready to start work on Monday," Bolton said.

Manns opened her candy store in 1987, seven years after Hurricane Allen struck her home on South Padre Island.

"I know how important it is to have a job and how that helps your self-esteem," Manns said. "I just want to give someone a chance to get their dignity back after this upheaval."

Kelly Hudson, president of LeadingEdge Personnel, a temporary employment firm specializing in placing office and clerical workers, said people his firm hires will be able to begin work the same day they interview.

The firm had 22 job openings Friday and had already begun receiving inquiries from job-hunting evacuees. "We've got job openings and these people need jobs," he said. "It's a perfect match."

Doesn't SA already have 1000s of equally poor, hopeless, unemployed blacks who haven't been "lucky" and "famous" enough to get on pushed onto everybody's radars-du-jour?

The affirmative action of throwing jobs at NO refugees is great, but why wasn't that already being done in NO and SA before the storm?

If the NO refugees would have had jobs and enough money before the storm, they would have had enough means, like white folks who left, to comply with the evacuation.

You do know a lot of those refugees weren't poor, just foolish enough to stay and ride out the storm.

Sure, there's large amount of really poor people, but there's also a large amount of middle class people who decided to ride out the storm not thinking it would be as bad. And it wasn't. What really did the damage was the levees breaking.

Fats Dominos (a famous singer who has sold 110 million plus albums) stayed in his home and had to be rescued, was he poor trash? No.

Please, watch the news on tv and reports on the internet before just typing senseless words on your computer keyboard.

    WTF?

Guess what...every city has problems. Every city has a poor, hopeless population be they white, black, Hispanic, whatever.

    You're ing amazing.

Why don't you go down to KellyUSA and tell those people they're lucky for going through what they went through and that now, since they're in a San Antonio that didn't help its own population, they too can now have money and a job that will allow them to escape the largest natural disaster ever in this country?

There's no ifs, and, buts, republicans or democrats.

You help people. You help those in need. Take the partisan bull outside and go ask Mayor Phil why he didn't do something like this before.

    You make me ing sick.

Exactly. Many of these people had jobs. ALl that is gone. The life they new is gone. And in many cases, people they knew are gone.

And this er named Boutons doesn't want to help these people because they stayed in New Orleans? Because some are below middle class? Because we already have poor people living in the city?

Good thinking there guy. Lets not help the people that just instantly became homeless. ing people sometimes.

Right now, we're seeing the best in a large number of people in this country.

The Ellis family offered to take in two kids. Kids! People! Humans!

Summers and her family went to volunteer.

Spurfect carried beans at a food bank.

Manny's used damn near 1000 minutes trying to get information for people to volunteer.

AHF organized a group to go help serve food to those in need.

And many countless others on this forum and the forum that is the United States and Earth.

You people trying to make this into a partisan issue and trying to swing this one way or the other make me ing retch that at a time like this, a time that we are seeing some of the worst depths and despair from people not unlike you and me.

Boutons, I hope you rot in , you son of a .

You know what, just for arguments- ing-sake and the fact that I'm so god-damned riled-up now...

Why NOT help the refugees establish themselves as contributing members of the San Antonio community?

Does it not help the local economy? Does it not give San Antonio near-limitless goodwill from those who report back about the hospitality they were shown?

Next thing I know, you're going to say that Mayor Phil did that just to get San Antonio mentioned on the news.

It couldn't actually be because we're human beings and wanted to help those the ways we know how? Right, Boutons?

You people can't read, so try it again:

I said it's great for SA, or wherever else, to help the refuguees.

Somehow, you're "riled-up-ness" twists that into me saying they shouldn't be helped.

I said absolutely nothing about Dem, Repug, partisan, politicizing.

So go back and read very carefully what I said (if you can quit reacting to other people's erroneous reading of what I said, and their own politicized diatribe), then try to get from my words to your totally ed up reactions. But it's pretty clear you'd rather jerk yourself off self-righteously than learn how to read.

Looks like a good time for the Military Recruiters to get into the refugee camps...three hots, a cot, jobs, $$...Afterall, SA IS Military City USA!

By the way, there are lots of jobs, some people just think they are too good to clean bathrooms, pick up trash, serve others, etc... People often know what they WANT, but rarely focus on what they NEED...Read the Classifieds

Boutons, you're an idiot. The jobs that are being offered aren't new jobs. They've been there. Anyone who wanted one could have applied for them. They are just going to make sure the refugees have a way to apply for them

I was waiting for the first person to about them.

I think whoever wants to work is OK by me.

THe people that are in SA right now, that passed on those jobs that are given to the NO refugees, they are where they are for a reason, they arent willing to work. I garuntee that these people are MORE than willing to work.

Good luck new Antonians. Hope to see you guys out and about.

There is nothing wrong with people getting an advantage on the compe ion when they just lost their way of living.

People who have not found a job for a period of time in San Antonio, at least have found a way to adapt to some sort of niche here. They might have family or friends or found odd jobs to make the difference.

Refugees have next to nothing in most cases. They need something to go on.

If I was thrown out of my house with nothing, at whatever age, and I didn't have a job and I had no relatives or friends or had some but that were stuck in the same situation, I would be sunk.

This is a very good idea. It is also nice to see some blind helping out by some business owners.

So you're telling me that if I search this forum, I won't find one instance of you politicizing the hurricane relief efforts?

And simply by asking why didn't the city do this before the hurricane, you're politicizing. You may not be going after one party in general, but a statement like that does go after the local politicos for not doing anything before.

It'll be interesting to see if a great number of people stay, and if wages get depressed as a result.
