The NBA and its teams are making a commitment of $2 million to humanitarian organizations to aid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, $1 million of which is pledged to the American Red Cross.
This commitment is in addition to the National Basketball Players Association announcement that the union will raise $1 million to assist in procuring and delivering supplies, including food and clothing, to the hardest-hit areas of the devastating storm that ripped through Louisiana, Mississippi and surrounding regions.
CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The Charlotte Bobcats and Sting are donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross. The check will be delivered to their local chapter on September 1 by Bobcats player Matt Carroll.
CHICAGO BULLS
Chris Duhon of the Chicago Bulls has partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina in Slidell, La., his home town. Duhon established the Chris Duhon Hurricane Relief Fund in an effort to seek financial support, food and clothing donations. Bulls Owner Jerry Reinsdorf has committed to a Bulls donation of $50,000 to Chris' fund.
“This tragic event has destroyed the homes and lives of many people – people I know,” Duhon said. “Many towns are experiencing this devastation and have yet to determine what, if any, buildings will be saved. We have to do something to help ease this burden.”
CLEVELAND, DENVER AND ORLANDO
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets and Orlando Magic are working with the McCormick Tribune Foundation to raise funds for hurricane afflicted areas. Funds raised, up to $1 million, will be matched at $0.50 by the McCormack Tribune Foundation. Fans can make donations at the team websites.
CONNECTICUT SUN
The Sun will donate its proceeds of box office sales for Friday night’s WNBA playoff game with the Detroit Shock to the American Red Cross to aid the ongoing relief effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina
DETROIT SHOCK
Louisiana native Cheryl Ford of the Detroit Shock donated her $12,500 cash prize she received as the winner of the WNBA Bud Light Peak Performers Rebound Leader to the American Red Cross to aid in relief efforts.
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
Baron Davis of the Golden State Warriors is assisting relief efforts by contributing $50,000 from the Baron Davis Foundation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
“I played for the New Orleans Hornets for three years,” Davis said. “The damage to the city from Hurricane Katrina is irreplaceable. Thousands of people are homeless. We all know someone who needs help right now. Everyone can make a difference, even $5, just by calling the Red Cross help line.”
HOUSTON ROCKETS AND COMETS
The Houston Comets will collect donations at all home playoff games and will offer free playoff tickets to Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi residents.
In addition, the Rockets and Comets will be hosting several activities at the Toyota Center Tuesday-Thursday next week. On Tuesday from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Houston residents are encouraged to donate goods (diapers, clothing, etc.) at the Toyota Center for those displaced to Houston. On Wednesday and Thursday, the doors to the Toyota Center will be opened for refugees to come and pick up the goods that have been donated. In addition, medical services, realtors, mental health professionals, career counselors, etc. will be on site to assist in any way possible.
The Rockets are also partnering with KTRC Channel 2 on a telethon featuring Rockets players and coaches. Phone banks will be set up for displaced folks to contact loved ones.
INDIANA FEVER
The American Red Cross will be attending the Indiana Fever’s first home playoff game to collect monetary donations for hurricane relief.
INDIANA PACERS
Danny Granger of the Indiana Pacers and Tan White of the Indiana Fever delivered a $30,000 check to their local American Red Cross Chapter on behalf of the Pacers/Fever organization.

The $1,035 proceeds from the Los Angeles Sparks’ in-arena silent auction on August 31 will go to the American Red Cross. The Los Angeles Lakers are making an initial donation of $10,000 to help support the devastated regions.
MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES
FedEx Forum and Power 99 FM are joining forces to help in the relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina by collecting bottled water and other non-perishable items in the Plaza area of FedEx Forum Friday from 6-10 a.m.
MIAMI HEAT
Miami Heat TV analyst Tony Fiorentino volunteered to answer phones and take pledges on August 31 during a Hurricane Relief Telethon in Miami. The local NBC affiliate raised over $200,000 for relief efforts.
MILWAUKEE BUCKS
Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Terry Stotts, General Manager Larry Harris and Bucks employees will participate in a locally televised American Red Cross telethon on September 1 to support hurricane relief efforts.
ORLANDO MAGIC
In addition to joining the Cavaliers and Nuggets in working with the McCormick Tribune Foundation to raise funds, the Magic has volunteered to hire 11 New Orleans Hornets employees and house them for free at the Marriott Vacation Club.
SACRAMENTO KINGS
Sacramento is hosting an online auction featuring one-of-a kind experiential items with the proceeds benefiting the American Red Cross. The Maloof family will match any amount raised via the auction.
SAN ANTONIO SPURS
The San Antonio Spurs will match every dollar donated to the American Red Cross by all Spurs Sports and Entertainment employees up to $5,000.
SEATTLE STORM
The Seattle Storm and the Sonics & Storm T.E.A.M. Foundation are joining the efforts of Storm center Janell Burse to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Donations will be collected at each of the Storm’s first round home playoff games, with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting the New Orleans-based Franklin Avenue Baptist Church’s hurricane relief efforts. Burse, a New Orleans native and Tulane alum, selected the recipient of the organization’s combined fundraising efforts.
WASHINGTON MYSTICS
Washington Mystics President and managing partner, Sheila Johnson has donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross to help with the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The Mystics current roster has two players from the state of Louisiana. Temeka Johnson is from New Orleans and Alana Beard is from Shreveport.
“The Mystics and so many of us have families and friends in the hurricane region and while our prayers go out to them, we hope our financial contribution will help them to rebuild,” said Sheila Johnson.

NBA stars to participate in hurricane relief game Sunday

HOUSTON (Ticker) - All-Stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade will play in an NBA Players Hurricane Relief Game organized by TNT analyst Kenny Smith.
The game is Sunday at 6 p.m. EDT at the Toyota Center and will be televised by TNT at 11 p.m. Participating players will donate funds and supplies valued at more than $1 million for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
"The game is a show of our support and solidarity for those affected by this natural disaster," Smith said. "As professional athletes we've been very privileged and this is one way we can help take care of our own."
Before the game, the players will distribute truckloads of their donated goods and supplies to shelters throughout the Houston area, many of which are housing displaced New Orleans residents. Items will include food, clothing, water, toiletries and other basic necessities.
Ticket proceeds will be donated to charity. Special ticket arrangements will be made for Hurricane Katrina victims.
In addition to being home to the NBA's Rockets, Houston is an offseason hot spot for players looking for compe ive offseason workouts. A handful of players in Sunday's game have ties to Houston or New Orleans.
Smith played with the Rockets, as did Orlando Magic guard Steve Francis and Los Angeles Clippers guard Sam Cassell. Current Rockets entered include guards Mike James and Derek Anderson.
New Orleans Hornets forward J.R. Smith will play. One of the coaches will be Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, a Louisiana native who went to Southern University.
Also scheduled to play are Detroit Pistons teammates Antonio McDyess and Lindsey Hunter. Both are natives of Mississippi, whose coastline also was hit hard by Katrina.
Others planning to participate are former NBA All-Star forwards Charles Oakley and Derrick Coleman, Indiana Pacers forwards Ron Artest and Jermaine O'Neal, Pistons guard Chauncey Billups, New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, Boston Celtics swingman Paul Pierce, Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning and Memphis Grizzlies guard Dahntay Jones.
Last year, Artest and O'Neal lost millions of dollars due to suspensions for fighting but are giving back. Mourning, who has undergone a kidney transplant, holds an annual charity game in Miami known as "Zo's Summer Groove."
At an NBA Players Association news conference Tuesday announcing a fund-raising initiative called "Operation Rebound," Marbury broke down and began crying while speaking about the tragedy that has left perhaps thousands dead and tens of thousands homeless.
TNT's telecast team will include analysts Smith and Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson as host and play-by-play announcer and Craig Sager as sideline reporter.
