I don't know what to make of Carr. He's obviously a tough kid and has tried to embrace a leadership role in Houston. Julius Peppers went 2nd and Harrington 3rd that year, and then Mike Williams and Jammer from UT went 4/5, and out of those five guys, I personally would take Peppers. I think people are realizing now that while he's a pretty good QB, he's not going to be a gamebreaking franchise player. He's Matt Hasselbeck with more hair, basically.

One more thing, though. Did Jacksonville and Carolina have different expansion rules than Houston? Both of those teams went to the conference le game their second year of existance.

Here's a list of the QB's eligible for the '02 draft:

    Aaron,Jeff (6-3,206,Alabama-Birmingham) OVR:52

the texans are out of years.
    they have to win soon
I'm not a fan but i know that, i just want to see them win some games
david carr has taken every snap so naturally youd turn to him and ask how much time he needs before we can call him a bust
    harringtons one already

You didn't bold Dwight Freeny? Freeny, Peppers, and Reed are the top 3 players on that list. I'd love to include Roy Williams, but Reed has proven to be an MVP caliber player. Hopefully Roy steps up this year and has a likewise performance.

I don't think you can call either Harrington or Carr a bust yet. They are now only going on their 4th year...it usually takes most QB's around this much time to mature.

With Harrington...yeah he makes stupid decisions sometimes under pressure. Most call him a failure because of his completion percentage so low as well as not many wins. What most don't realize is up untill last season, the Lions have not had a running game. Also very crappy receivers. In the past two seasons, the Lions have led the league in dropped passes...that can't all fall on Harrington's shoulders...I've seen so many of the Lions' sure handed receivers, like Roy Williams, drop so many gimmees....Now that said, I say this is the season to label him a bust if he can't get it done with the weapons he has now.

As for Carr...much of his failures has to do with in inferior o-line...at least in my opinion. If D. Davis can put together a full healthy season...and another wideout steps up to relieve some pressure of A. Johnson, Carr might deliver more than he has the past 3 years.

When I was looking over the Texans roster earlier, I noticed that former Nebraska QB Jamaal Lord is a 2nd year SS. Houston's QB roster consists of Carr, Dave Ragone (horrible in the only two starts he's ever made in the NFL, but a NFLE All Pro), BJ Symons (who's probably only there becuase he's from H-Town), Preston Parsons (third team in his career and has still never seen the field), and 53 year old Tony Banks.

When the third best QB on your team is an inactive roster safety, you got problems. I looked over Houston's roster and can't believe some of the names on there.

A&M's old backup punter Cody Scates? LaTarence Dunbar, the TCU wideout that got cut from Arenaball? Vernand Morency from Okie State, Tatum Bell's old backup?

Freeney was a risky pick at the time, I seemed to remember. Didn't he have a ruptured spleen when he was drafted?

You have to start off your franchise with a QB though and they thought Carr would be a great QB to start off with.

The Cowboys would probably like to have someone of Carr's ability.

A servicable QB. Maybe not a superstar, but good enough. If Houston had the advantages that Carolina and Jacksonville did, they would be in an eviable situation.

I like watching the Texans. They try hard (unlike a team that is up the road just a bit) and will get over the hump one of these days.

Carr throws a pretty ball - one of the best in the league. He's still young... I'll think he'll put the intangibles together and make it to the playoffs, especially as his team gets better. He needs to give up the whipped husband act though.

  15. #15
I wouldn't call Carr a washout or a bust, he's definitely a good starting QB and he's had some good wins for the young Texans team, some good come from behind wins i've seen so he's definitely a good QB that can win games.

He needs a stud RB in the backfield and I think also he would fluorish better under someone other than Capers
Capers is a good guy to build up the franchise with just as he did in Carolina, but I think he can only go so far with a team. Carr is definitely not struggled as badly as Joe Harrington has...this is his make or break year for him in Detroit.

btw Peppers was the STUD of that Draft

Their career stats are eerily similar.

    Carr

    44 G
    56.8 COMP %
    8136 YDs
    34 TDs
    42 INTs

    Harrington

    46 G
    54.2 COMP %
    8221 YDs
    48 TDs
    50 INTs

    It's all perception...

I wouldn't be suprised if Tatum Bell is out of the starting line-up soon. It happens just about every year. The Broncos starter gets hurt the back-up has a break out season.

Two words...Jeff Tedford. He's the sole reason Carr and Harrington were anywhere near anything in college. Every single QB he's had was great in college and has struggled in the NFL.

    Trent Dilfer
    Akili Smith
    Joey Harrington
    David Carr
    Kyle Boller
    Aaron Rodgers

None of these were even good Qbs. Dilfer won a SB but that defense is the one who really won it. Not him.

Smith is nothing, Harrington, Carr, Boller haven't proven much of anything in the NFL. I don't think Rodgers will either. He's basically just like Bob Stoops with his Qbs.

On the subject of the draft, if there was anybody who came out a loser in this years draft, it's Joey Harrington. Now he has absolutely no excuse to fail, and if he does, he's out of there.

He has to have a Brees-like year or win a playoff game to stay. I don't agree with it, but such is life in the NFL...

  23. #23
I say the Lions should start Orlovsky...tank the season...and then draft Matt Leinart next year...at this point in his career he's already better than Harrington, Garcia, and Orlovsky put together.

  24. #24
I dont think some people realize that the Texans were 7-9 last year. They were in playoff contention till the final two weeks of the season. I think Carr has done a good job. If anyone had the horrible O-line he has had to deal with their stats would be comparable. The Texans went to a new blocking scheme last season and it took them half the year to start gelling...Davis then started to hold on to the football and became an effective back. I truely feel that if the Defense can step up this year..they gave up way to many 3rd down conversions last year, the Texans will make the playoffs!

They have a great chance making the playoffs this season. They are all still very young players, of the core Carr is the vet. The only thing that might prevent them making the playoffs is the difficulty of the division they play in. Jax is a nice young team that can go into the playoffs, Indy still has Peyton, James and Harrison. The only team that has issues are the ans. Even then they should be better with Henry, not much better but better.
