If what we are hearing is accurate, the Spurs are likely to announce that Tim Duncan's playing days are over. The writing is on the wall. Although most of us will undoubtedly feel sad, its also a time to celebrate everything Tim did for the Spurs, the fans and the city.

This year, more than ever, we are seeing the impact superstars leaving their original teams has on their former communities. The feelings of anger, heartbreak and betrayal, etc.. Tim was faced with a similar situation 16 years ago and decided to stay. He stayed despite being tempted to play with two young studs in Orlando named Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady. He stayed despite his closest ally on the team nearing retirement and his franchise possibly being relocated to another city.

When he finally says "I'm done playing", every fan can be certain that Tim gave all he had for the franchise. He helped the team stay in San Antonio, led the team to 5 championships, took pay-cuts to ensure the team remained compe ive and through his leadership, established a humble, winning culture.

We all saw what Tim played like with his body betraying him. It wasn't pretty. His body finally gave out and he became hesitant to shoot. His shot was being blocked by scrubs. Guys he would have dunked on or made look foolish with an array of low post moves were giving him a hard time. That is what hurt more than thought of him retiring. I hated to see him go through that.

If this is it, it's time to celebrate all he has done and look forward to the future.

First time wearing #21 in front of the fans. This was at his inauguration in front of the Alamo a few days after he was drafted.

I'm hoping he at least sticks around as a player development coach to replace the departing Chad Forcier.

I know what you mean about it being hard to watch the wheels finally falling off. But most things don't end unless they end badly.
