David Locke posted this item after the game
From http://weareutahjazz.com/lockedonjaz...orch-the-jazz/The Spurs defense this year has been historically great. It has been even better in the 1st quarter and 1st half. They held the Hawks to 25 points last week. They did the same to the Jazz tonight. When the Spurs won the championship the awesome part of their offense was that every pass was made assuming the player would be there without any hesitation and it made the Spurs faster than everyone else. They are doing the same thing on the defensive end now. There guys move anticipating the next pass and are always a step ahead of the offense. The know their assignments. They understand where the ball is likely to go. They cover that and know that their teammates will cover everything else.
I seriously wonder if they have done some mastermind study that tells them where passes go from spots on the floor with the stats vu cameras and have adjusted defensively in a way that no one else in the league has done. It doesn’t make a lot of sense that this team is that great defensively and they are not just great they are on the verge of being the best defensive team since the 3 point play was ins uted in the game. It is incredible.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting this.
Meh, I'll get excited when and if we keep teams like the Clips/Dubs/Roxs/OKC in the high 80s low 90s.
Pop must have hacked into the opposition's headsets radio signal ala Billacheat
The VU Camera theory is interesting. Maybe this is the next trend the Spurs have proven themselves ahead of the curve in.
Point Guards are getting shut down in Parker Island, LMA is an upgrade over Splitter on BOTH ends, Kawhi has been great on D per par besides the TOR game, Green is back from his vacation, and Duncan is still the best anchor in the league.
21-5 with brand new players getting accustomed to the system...
NBA = cucked by playff time
Yeah right, it was the rail you just snorted
This plus no Belinelli/Neal type defenders on the bench/getting significant minutes.
got damn hayward 1 of 5 from the field and -42, completely shut down![]()
yet the 2nd unit always s up the D, particularly Mills and West
Interesting theory. Also it is very odd that the opponents are scoring so low.
Let's wait for a couple more blow outs. Maybe he's got a point.
Funniest quote from article:
Gordon Hayward plus minus might never recover. He was -42 tonight in 22 minutes
87.9 opponent ppg, good for best in the NBA by far.
The lowest I recall for the Spurs was 2003/04 when they allowed a crazy 84.3ppg (but only scored 91.5ppg ourselves) Think there have been a few rule changes since then though. Amazing holding opponents to 87.9ppg in this day and age though.
Spurs first team defense is intrinsically good so I'm going to discount *for now* any notion that Pop has a secret new kind of defense.
I mean look, you got Leonard, Green, Aldridge and Duncan. Those are very good defensive players!
Add to that, really bad teams (Sixers) and really tired teams (Jazz).
It just seems like the schedule seems rigged to make contenders look much better than they really are.
-42...... thats got to be some kind of record for a player his caliber.
It's hard to believe it could still be done in this version of the game. They've played enough games now that it can't be ignored or tossed off as a fluke. They are playing elite defense.
The key to beating the Warriors, I think, is going to be keeping everyone not named Curry from getting into any kind of rhythm. "Ugly up" the game, the way the old Spurs used to do, and frustrate them mentally. Pop is going to have to throw different looks at them, and keep up the pressure with different groups on the floor. I'm thinking that Pop is more interested in Simmons' length and athleticism on the defensive end than the number of points he's putting up.
Absolutely. This is what I've been banging on the table about ever since he was signed. Ignore the spectacular dunks, Simmons is there to work on shutting down or tiring out opposing guards.
They're running everyone off the 3 point line, while at the same time when Duncan and Aldridge are in the game they contest heavily everything at the rim. They're taking away opportunities for the most efficient shots AND are not fouling either. Atlanta the other night were shooting in the 20s or something similar in the first half at shots within 3 feet. I think what the Spurs have been doing defensively is very sustainable, though perhaps not at the current all time level.
That's some scary .
B2b DPOYs, tbh.
