Ultimate what-if: Sources reveal 2007 Kobe-for-LeBron trade talk
"At that time, the Lakers had to do something. I was just losing faith in what they were trying to do. It was like I was a meal ticket," Bryant told ESPN's Baxter Holmes this week. "You come out and score 40, 50 points, fill the seats, we're going to keep the payroll at a minimum, generate revenue.
"I never would've approved it. Never. The trade to go to Cleveland? Never," Bryant told Holmes. "That wasn't one of the teams that was on my list. It was Chicago, San Antonio [or] Phoenix."
Wasn't he also considering Detroit? I remember the Lakers having a trade to Detroit worked out and Buss went to Kobe and told him about it, and to sleep on it and tell him if that's what he really wanted.
He wasn't. Dr Buss told him they had a deal ready and either he went back to practice and shut his mouth or they were moving him to Detroit. Obviously he shut up after that.
That's why Dr Buss was a GOAT owner, tbh and the Lakeshow might never recover
But he'd still have to approve it since he had a grandfathered in full trade clause, not just a trade kicker.
Hmm, I always thought Snitch was down. Props to Buss for making the move with no consent, give Kobe a taste of his own medicine.
I almost wish this would've happened just to see the meltdown that would've ensued in laker town![]()
I wonder what order the Spurs were on that list....
I'd imagine #1 since they were the champs.
Kobe Johnson as our starting PG would have been![]()
Would all the laker trolls even exist? I imagine this would've sent them all to their graves.
glad that didn't happen. kobe. I enjoy every laker loss this season
He was never going to go to San Antonio. He only said that for leverage with the organization. He would have never left L.A. willingly.
The more the Lolkers win, the better. If they don't get a Top 3 pick, they lose their pick.
The Lakers are so irrelevant that my hate for them has been muted the last few years. The Lakers? Pffft.
The sight of Kobe in a Spurs uni would've burned the eyes right out of my sockets back in 2007, when I despised him terribly. But as with any fan base, San Antonio would've quickly learned to embrace him had he somehow wound up here. Hypothetically, of course. Was never a realistic scenario imo.
They'd exist, but as Spurs fans instead, just like how a ton of suddenly Carolina fans are now Denver fans.
The only player I could have never stomached here was Karl Malone. I would have quit being a Spurs fan had they signed him in 2004-05.
me too.
Could never take the Kobe story seriously. Imagine Kobe and his salary requirements with our FO. Seriously.
Seconded. Always hated the Mailman, and his dirty elbow to Robinson's temple only heightened those feelings. Guy was a POS.
RIP, OG Buss, tbh... his kids are garbage
Well Kobe is pretty much the anti-Spur as you could get. With that said I always respected the out of him for not crying to the media about Bowen when you had Ray Allen and Carter crying crocodile tears. Say what you will, but Kobe was a of a compe or and he relished the opportunity to go head to head with Bruce and the Spurs. I only wish his team hadn't fallen off a cliff so fast so that we could have smashed them a few more times in the playoffs.
Who the Spurs would give up if they wanted to get Kobe?
Manu + Enrique ?
