    From widely respected Economist magazine..

According to a poll for ESPN, soccer has become the second-most popular sport for 12-24 year olds, after American football, and is the standout leader among Hispanics of the same age.
Last year, the Women’s World Cup final attracted a domestic TV audience of 27m—roughly the same as the record-setting college American football championship game in 2015. Until recently, the challenge had been to keep people interested between World Cups. A rise in the number of games from other countries that are broadcast live has helped. According to Stephen Master of Nielsen, which measures such things, there is now more live soccer available on American TV than in any other country.
In 2015, newly formed New York City FC sold 15,000 season tickets before they had kicked a ball. The league is set to grow from 20 to 24 teams over the next two seasons, and one of the youngest, most eclectic fan bases of all American sports—52% of MLS fans are aged 18-34, the highest proportion of any professional sports league.

America needs fluke its way to top 10 player and host another World Cup and all bets are off..Huge potential for Corporate America in the sport, tbh..

US of Gay will never put out a National Team that's even compe ive with the best in the world

The MLS final drew a pathetic 0.4 Nielsen rating.

It's fun watching actual good players in Europe, South America, and Mexico though

By the way, last Sunday's Mexico-Uruguay game drew more viewers on Univision than any of the Hockey finals games

At the same time as the Finals and Game of Thrones, too....

I'd rather we dominate sports that are highly sophisticated to play and fun to watch.

If we're talking about relative height difference:
    -Barry Sanders
    -Wayne Gretzky
    -Wardell
    -Demetrious Johnson
    -Tyson

...let's not even talk about individual sports where athletes don't have to face each other.

Soccer is on such on massive upward trend, that an international match featuring our men's team can barely beat women's softball

    http://sportstvratings.com/usa-costa...e-7-2016/5209/

The "growing popularity" among 12-24 year olds is easily explained by the fact that the birth rate among hispanics over the last couple of decades well outpaces that of native born Americans who've been here at least a couple generations (note: Mexican-Americans of 3rd and 4th generations don't really give a about povertyball). And the great ratings the women drew is easily explained by patriotism. Americans will tune in en masse to watch like swimming and gymnastics if the US is competing internationally.

God, I hate this "sport." Sorry. I think it's a fundamentally broken game design that is only popular because 3rd worlders can play it with a goat's head.

    Why is it broken?

    Low and predictable scoring.

"Haha, you're just a dumb American who needs scoring to be entertained!"

Not really. Sports and games in which scoring is difficult are just less interesting by default due to the low comeback factor and the variety of cheap tactics a defense can employ when it gets a lead (i.e. parking the bus). Soccer games play out in such a predictable and uneventful way most of the time. Pretty much every game is some variation of a 0-0, 1-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2 scoreline. I'm not saying there is isn't drama and interesting comebacks at times, but nothing that compares to the utter miracles that happen in American sports. Once a team goes up by a couple of goals in soccer, game is pretty much over (and yes, I know there have been comebacks, trust me, I've tried getting into this sport before).

The low scoring factor also prevents punch-counterpunch shootouts from happening to the extent that they happen in American sports. For example, you'll never see Messi and Ronaldo trading multiple goals in a huge matchup.

Basketball obviously has this. Football has this. And baseball has this in the form of a pitcher's duel and/or high run games where teams are trading homers and big hits.

Ties. Soooooo many ties in this sport, which again, is evidence of its poor design. And overtime doesn't guarantee a winner like in other sports. So what is the solution? To decide the match on a in' minigame that little resembles the main game aside from kicking the ball. I don't care how "dramatic" shootouts are, it is a cheap way to end something as an important as a World Cup final.

Very high luck factor. A team can dominate another in terms of time of possession, shots on goal, corner attempts, and still lose the game 1-0 on something as cheap as the opponent diving in the box and scoring on his free kick. Which brings me to:

Fouls in the box are disproportionally awarded. We've established how important a single goal is, yet a player who is fouled in the box, even if he didn't have the ball or wasn't in an advantageous scoring position is given a free shot on goal that he'll convert over 90% of the time.

"But basketball does this with FTs."

True, and look how we rage when the "Thunderrefs" are given excessive trips to the line. Luckily, goals in basketball are cheap so it isn't impossible for a team to overcome a a big FTA deficit, but in soccer, if one team gets a couple of penalty kicks in the box, game is essentially over. So many matches have been decided by this ("No Era Penal," Mexico winning CONCACAF on the back of, I think, 3 free penalty kicks over the last 3 rounds).

And diving. No other sport rewards blatant acting like soccer.

    /end rant

Or the World Cup in general. I like it for the national fervor and all but aside from that, the only thing that ever caught my attention was the US's run to the quarterfinals in 2002 (especially the Portugal game) and the Brazil booty whipping a couple years back in front of their fans.

    As someone said, poverty ball.

Which has nothing to do with it being a sport or not. Baseball is an awfully boring and they play twice as many games each season as than they should (it should be a summer weekend and holiday sport only) yet it blows soccer away in a number of ways, namely that there is guaranteed to be a score and it usually won't take extra innings to get there.

No argument here but it still beats soccer 9/10, especially "elite" soccer matches that end in 0-0 ties.

I'll take an underrated sport like tennis over soccer. It's both international and more sophisticated to play while also being accessible to people of every socioeconomic background.
