I see some super sketchy ads on Craigslist for vehicles way under market value. Just wondering if anyone here had ever bought a car or truck on Craigslist.

my friend from college did, and sold it to me 6 months later for $1400. Very durable and fuel efficient car. Do it, but contact the owner first and make sure you test drive it and do a thorough little eye, ear and feel test as a subs ute for a costly professional inspection. Also check the registration sticker, the later the better because that means it's been inspected, passed inspection and re-registered in the near past.

Craigslist, similar sites and personal friends are DEFINITELY the way to go for buying a car, unless you are a high roller and bent on spending too much on a new car (terrible investment, they depreciate like crazy and you don't get tax breaks for that either, sorry). You're likely to get huge bargains but you have to know all the details, if buying from a stranger always get paperwork.

I go directly through the seller and leave craigslist out of it.

Just like an ad in the paper.

Go see the car before buying it.

We hired a baby sitter from Craigs List but when she showed up, she was dressed like a and smelled of alcohol. She also wanted $200 an hour. Or $100 if she used her own place.

You should let her share the booze with your children.

I wouldn't buy anything off Craigslist. It's not worth the hassle/risk.

Was she 14 and from the Philippines? If so she's way past her prime.

I have, and over sold cars on CL. Like someone said above, it's just a newspaper ad. If a vehicle is priced WAY below market value, I can think of two reasons. 1) the le is a salvage and the fixed it up to sell. If you don't mind that, fine, but know that going in. Also, insurance MAY be higher on a salvage le. 2) it's someone that, if you contact them about the car, they'll say "oh, I'm military and have already been sent onto my next duty station, send me the money and I'll send you the car" or some other bull story. That's a scam.

Just treat it like you would any larger transaction. If you want to avoid these problems just look for vehicles within a small variance of blue book
