In the big 3 era, among NBA watchers..HS ballers etc. If you asked 10 guys, spurs fan or not, who their favourite spur...More often, the Answer was Manu Ginobili.
Sure most people who dont watch the NBA would probably recognize the name Duncan more but within the NBA community Ginobili seemed like the most popular out of the three.
Ginobili had crazy marketibility potential, but it wasn't right for Tim to take a backseat in the regard since he was a much superior player...but i've asked way too many people about this, and its evide nt that Ginobili was the popular guy.
Hence why in those years people use to call Ginobili the "exciting" guy.
A slasher is more exciting to watch than someone who jab steps you to death and then banks the ball in... backs you down and then throws a hook over you. I have no doubt Duncan is the best Spur to ever play but the way Ginobli played was just so much fun to watch.

Same reason they gave Manu another two year deal he was barely worth the first offer that he leveraged the Spurs on his last contract shows you his lack of class and his knowing that w/ Timmy gone they needed the Mexican butts he puts in the seats,pretty simple

Manu is an exciting player and extroverted. Tim is steady and not as exciting and introverted.
If he is this is a good question. Too bad popularity doesn't win games, as we've witnessed this season.

He's latino. San Antonio is primarily latino. Lets be honest, how many latino's have ever made a name for themselves in the NBA's history? Not very many. Its good to see someone as electrifying as Manu has been since inception make a dent in this this sport and be a role model for the community.
I agree with others regarding Manu being exciting to watch and very charismatic. For me, David was also more exciting to watch than was Timmy. Also, Manu has eyes in the sides & back of his head. He's very high risk-reward. The entertainment factor & charisma can directly affect popularity.
Tim Duncan is the greatest Spurs player of all time. Nothing else matters.
