LeBron James is leaving home again and leaving behind something he says is more meaningful than any of his NBA championships. James, who this month ended his second stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, has opened a public school for challenged children in his hometown. The NBA great admitted to having "jitters" before the opening, an event he said is "going to be one of the greatest moments -- if not the greatest -- of my life."

The I Promise School initially will house 240 third- and fourth-graders. The Akron school will expand each year, adding second and fifth grades next year and will have students from grades 1-8 by 2022.
    - Public School, NOT a charter school
    - Programs for the parents of these kids to expand their education, as well
    - Graduates will have their college education paid for

Salute to LeBron for attacking the root cause of issues in the culture..teaching kids at a crucial age, before it's too late for them, and also educating the parents, which is something usually ignored in the community..

He could have been just another that blamed white people..or took a on Blacks like Sir Coon does..he could have been the cause of hood genocide like Dad Killer or a fake like Kobe..rather than all that, he's become the most influential figure in modern sports history, realizing it's bigger than basketball

Gonna around and make me not dislike the Lakers

So, will Laker fans now come and diss Lebron, or will they support him? What will ClipperNation do? What shoudl I do? I'm so confused, tbh.

Can't front one of the most impressive public services by a star athlete in modern history. Maybe of all time but I cant say that definitively. Jalen and David have schools /leadership acadamey so props to them too. JJ watt and others have helped victims of hurricanes etc.

But harlem is right this is life-changing, community building stuff.
Even if he was on the Celtics, this would be just as impressive.
And even even if he never surpasses Jordan on the court off it he already has.

Support him and hate the Lakers.
I feel the same about Jason Tatum and Kyrie ... (talking sports not socially)

LeBron opens school to get kids away from life in and out of jail, but then dangles the jail carrot on a stick for them with over 100 pairs of game worn Lebron's out in a hallway..

Definitely a great move by LeBron. Now that he no longer cares about competing for championships, he can devote plenty of time and energy to giving back to the community.

Black excellence. Hopefully this begets a trend of more athletes being involved in the community outside of basketball camps.

Also people like to on jordan but he's the first AA majority owner of an nba franchise and has put a lot of black people in positions that weren't possible before.

True. But doesn't excuse his lack of using his unique platform to speak on social injustice.
But great point he has placed people of color in high positions

I was born in the 80's but grew up during 90's. You are obviously older then me but honestly back then it wasn't easy to speak out about racial issues like it is today due to social media not existing and the internet being in it's infancy. Lebron also is fortunate to be part of my generation which is the millennial generation. Millennials are the most progressive generation on race issues and we are equal in size to the boomers. So basically Lebron has a whole entire generation of people backing him on this issues and hence it doesn't take guts to speak out about it. Whereas MJ didn't have the favorable demographics to talk about race during his era in the NBA. I don't think Lebron deserves any credit for speaking out on race when it's been the most popular thing to do since the start of this decade. I respect Russel and Jabbar more so for speaking out against racism during their eras since it was much more tougher to do so due to the demographics and climate of the country unlike it is today.

If you acknowledge KAJ and Russell spoke out in an even more difficult era, then i don't know how this helps Jordan tbh

Your right it doesn't help MJ but my point is I don't think Lebron would have spoke out either about race during the 90's. There was no social media platform to do it and politically it wasn't an issue that was talked much about outside a few blips which was the LA riots and OJ Simpson trial.
