The real question is what is going on here. San Antonihomers would say that it means that Hardberger is already getting down to brass tacks with Benson.
If he really believes what he said, well, that's Puro San Antonio.
Just a few short weeks ago, Hardberger was talking as if spending money to get the Saints to stay would be money well spent. Now he's flipping to "take it or leave it." All that courting just to dump her at the altar? If that's the case, thanx for nothin Hardberger.

If bringing the New Orleans Saints to San Antonio requires the city to build the NFL team a stadium, it's not going to happen, Mayor Phil Hardberger said Thursday.
"That would be a deal breaker for me," Hardberger said.
Although the Saints have yet to make a new stadium a prerequisite for permanent relocation, Hardberger said representatives of owner Tom Benson have signaled city officials that Benson wants to play in a new stadium rather than the Alamodome.
"There have been general conversations along the lines that it would be nice to have" a new stadium, Hardberger said. "Let's say there have been some general hints that our standing would be improved if we said, 'We will build you a new, state-of-the-art stadium.'"
But Hardberger made it clear he has no plans to offer a stadium as an incentive.
"If that kills it," Hardberger said of a potential deal with the Saints, "then it kills it."

Hardberger just couldn't keep his mouth shut. He could have stayed off the boob tube and still try to work out a deal, but NOOOOOOOO. He couldn't shut his piehole and now we have a bruhaha.
Thanks a pile, Phil.
We ain't gonna pay a dime. If they want the privilege of playing in the most glorious city on the earth, the cradle of civilization, then they are going to have to play in that thar Alamodome or Alamo Stadium, for that matter. We call the shots. We just got our third Best Buy. [/San Antonihomer]
LOL. Can you imagine using Alamo Stadium, aka "The Rock", for the NFL? With one consession stand? Or are there 2? And all that available parking!
Anyway, that made me burst out laughing.
And it holds a whopping 23,000 fans. Its perfect for
"small market" San Antonio.
They should just agree to play here a couple of years and then talk about a new stadium.
I think we need to write Tag immediately with our new idea to show the NFL how much we covet them. Yeah baby, we want you soooooo bad, we insist on using the Rock. Hey, if the Judson Rockets can sell it out, you guys have a good shot.![]()
Yep we use to pack the house back in the day and they still do.
Well there it is. Hardberger is proving to be nothing more than your average run-of-the-mill politician who talks out of both sides of his mouth. Dude better start working on damage control pretty soon. Otherwise, he's just gonna go down in history as the Mayor who talked a good fight, but turned tail and ran when it was time to step into the ring."We want to know how much money realistically (Saints games) can bring into the city," Hardberger said. "I consider Tom Benson a friend, but Tom Benson isn't going to give his team away."
Luring the Saints to San Antonio could cost millions, Hardberger said.
"To get a team you have to spend money, and many people only see that part of it," Hardberger said. "But you have to ask what you are going to get out of it. If you are getting back $3 for every dollar you spend, so what if it takes millions?"
in sell-out

Hardberger needs to shut up and he needed to that a long time ago. If reporters are hounding him, he doesn't have to say much or just say that he can't talk about it. That's it but all this talking is making me believe that we are being played.
He knows a new stadium will be needed and if talks for a new stadium arrive, Hardberger will not be involved in the negotiation process because, if the time arrives, he will no longer be mayor due to term limits.
He's just covering his own ass when it comes to local taxpayer money cause he can always stand by his statements that he never wanted to use San Antonio taxpayer money for a new football stadium. Meantime, the new mayor will have to deal with a new stadium situation and financing it, should the NFL come to San Antonio.
However, Hardberger seems to insist that state money would be able to finance a facility:
Even if there is private money coming in for a new facility, the city and/or county will have to cough up some sort of equity to do so, plus the city will not make any money from a privately owned venue. It could be, of course, that the state could get involved with that or it could be developers on their own right get involved with that," Hardberger said. "There are other ways stadiums get built. But as far as San Antonio being a player in the building of a new stadium, I wouldn't want to do that."
Here's a question to ponder...what cons utes "public money" in the eyes of Mayor Hamburger? Would it be public debt issued to pay for the construction of a stadium that is to be paid off with stadium revenues (and, oh yeah, the city would be on the hook for any shortfalls in servicing the debt)?
The Alamodome can work.
There is no need to build another dome. It just needs an upgrade to the lux boxes.
Don't read to much into the article.
Hardberger was on the news and said he's still very much after an NFL team ie. the Saints , but that he would not support a "city funded" stadium hwoever that if a private stadium is built he hopes it's the most lavished and furnished stadium any city in the nation has to offer.
The Saints can just use the 110k seat professional soccer stadium that will be built next to the SBC Center.
Damn, Scott and MB need to move to Canada ASAP.
Who's your bridesmaid? Stout?
It's not that big of a deal, if the NFL wants to leave then bye.
