I think Boykins would be a cost effective replacement for Claxton and would provide the Spurs with one of the better backup point guards in the league.

He's small, but so was Claxton. The difference is he might be more willing to carve a career out of being a backup point guard.

An added bonus is he had good games against the Lakers last season and overall, played well in big games in the fourth quarter.

If the Spurs and Claxton agree to part ways, I believe that they should take a close look at Boykins.

    I agree Timvp

his defense is also very good, he replaced Gilbert Arenas in 4th quarters because of it.

His outside shot is decent, hes aggressive, and he can run the offense.

Horry, Piatkowski, Boykins, would be excellent additions.

    Good point, T Park.

Boykins adds another good three-point shooter, whereas Claxton didn't hit a three this season.

For less money, the Spurs can get a willing, effective backup.

    Good times.

What's also important, is that Earl can move fast therefore maintaining our intensity like Speedy does.
Also, he can score in spurts and should be happy with a bench role.

    Could be worth a look.

He performed well last season. His size is definitely of some concern.

And of course I've been waiting to type...

I've been knowing Earl Boykins since Derrick Dial told me.

There are reports that San Antonio contacted the player's agent to determine whether Boykins would be available and interested if the backup point guard slot opens up.
Boykins played backup to Golden State's Gilbert Arenas last season and averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 assists.

I love this guy for all the obvious reasons. The little dude took games over last year. He played the fourth when Arenas wasn't playing consistently well. His Career-High is 28 points (vs. Minnesota, 1/17/03). I think in Pops system he might show to be a great backup point guard, capable enough to get minutes, but he isn't going to demand too much.

I suggested this guy 2 wks ago and was hammered for my suggestion...I thought I was right, but the reaction was so negative that I let it go. I think he is a good player that would fit in here.

Whoever the back-up point guard is for the Spurs won't be seeing a lot of minutes (barring injury). Tony obviously will get the bulk of the minutes, Manu will see some minutes at the point, then the back-up.

I was told that the Spurs are looking at some guys in summer league to fill this spot. Plus obviously they were snooping around looking at Armstrong and now Boykins.

I like Boykins because he was clutch last year, vital in 4th quarter comebacks for Golden State on a regular basis.

He's short, but he's fun to watch.

He would be an excellent addition, and one that I believe Pop considered before Speedy arrived (or maybe after he got hurt).

Like many said here, he often played PG for GS while Arenas sat on the bench in the 4th quarter, or while Arenas played 2 guard.

    Boykins is a strong backup.

If we have to lose Speedy, Boykins isn't a bad replacement.

As long we don't have to break the bank in signing him, Boykin as a Spur is not a bad idea IMHO.

Just curious Kori but where did you hear this? I've always thought Manu might thrive in spot minutes at the point but I'd be interested to know if you have a reliable source that can confirm this for next year.

Boykins would indeed be a good replacement. I went to a Mavs vs. GS game, and I swear he can get up and down the court in about 1.2 seconds. He uses his size (or lack thereof)to his advantage as well.

Sounds OK, if just to keep some speed at the position.

Baseline, speed is what Tony used to outplay Kidd in the finals. Boykins can be almost, if not just as quick as Tony, and that can help them outrun and outplay almost any pg in the league...especially if Tony is getting the primary minutes (which he would), Boykins would be awesome.

Plenty of room to sign Horry, Pike and Mini-me, now.

No thanks.. If the Spurs sign Earl Boykins after losing out on Kidd and Speedy, they can screw off... What a waste.
