Good shooter but why would we need another point guard. Isn't he listed at 6'2"?
At practice facility today according to KSAT noon report.
Good shooter but why would we need another point guard. Isn't he listed at 6'2"?
Hey, just what we needed, another undersized shooting guard.
Scales has played professionally all over the globe since finishing his career at Oregon, but is still looking to catch on in the NBA after attending training camps with the Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets in 2003 and 2004. Scales has played in Italy, Korea and China, where he helped replace Yao Ming on the Shanghai Sharks. Also on Scales' resume is a stint playing for new Sonics assistant Ralph Lewis in the NBDL. Scales led the 2005 Sonics summer-league squad with 12.6 points per game, shooting 50% from the field. He then shined for the U.S. qualifying team, averaging 10.3 points per game. Scales is an outstanding shooter, but at 6-2, he has to demonstrate the ability to play the point to stick in the NBA.

He's usually the last cut for NBA teams. Houston a couple of yrs. ago, Seattle this year along with Noel.
He's a good leaper, nice scoring touch but not much of a swingman defensively. He's a 6-4, 185 2-guard
Little known fact about Alex, he's the great grandson of legendary blues guitarist Albert King.
Nets Waive Alex Scales
East Rutherford, NJ (October 25, 2004) - The New Jersey Nets have requested waivers on guard Alex Scales, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today. Scales, who signed with the Nets prior to the start of training camp, appeared in five preseason games, averaging 2.6 ppg in 4.6 mpg.
why not noel instead of him!
Scales is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard. Why would the Spurs want him? I guess they think they need some perimeter scoring, but this guy has no NBA future. He can score but he's a horrible defender and way to small to be a true two guard.
Dumb move.
Isn't he with USA Basketball? He's like 28 and has yet to stick in the league.
Anyways, I'm sure he plays by the hour, which of course is the primary requirement.
Go Marcus! I agree.
Though it's not official, the Spurs are signing him. I guess it should be official before game time tonight.
Alex is a good guy. He's a great shooter. But he's small and doesn't defend. They tried to switch him to a point guard when he was in Seattle's training camp, but he's not a good enough ball handler.
Hmmm...one your points is already pressed into action at the 2 spot out of dire necessity. You have a capable reserve point behind him.
I guess I better shout out a "Go! Spurs! Go!" before I start to question this team's moves.
The Spurs are obiviously bringing him in as a backup 2 -- not a point guard. He's played the 2 his whole life sans a little bit of time at the point in Korea and in Seattle's camp.
He might be able to come in and hit some quick midrange jumpers when the Spurs need some offense.
Why not just go away and be miserable and root for another team.
Since rooting for a world champion is so painfull for you you miserable .
Why don't you go to spurs.com and hit F5 all day?
No one else sees the irony?![]()
Is the guy 6'2" or 6'4"? He's listed listed as 6'4" on the link Ducks gave.
Defense can be taught, but a shooting touch is sometimes hard to find.
I know nothing about the guy.
He has always been listed at 6'4. This season in Sonics training camp he was measured and they listed him at 6'2. So I assume that he's really 6'2 -- he looks very slight. He's extremely skinny and looks just like Stephen A. Smith in the face.
It's official ...
SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed free agent guard Alex Scales. Per club policy terms of the agreement were not announced.
The 6-2, 180-pound guard spent the 2005 training camp and preseason with the Seattle Sonics where he averaged 5.6 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists in seven preseason games. Scales also spent the 2005 summer league with the Sonics where he led the team in scoring with 12.6 points per game while shooting 50% from the field.
The University of Oregon product has played professionally for the last five seasons. He has been a part of training camps with the Houston Rockets (2003) and the New Jersey Nets (2004) as well as spending time in Italy, Korea, and China
The Spurs immediately placed Scales on the inactive list.
I agree with SW
No thread hijacking please.
The moral of this whole Alex Scales story is that I should check my cell phone messages and return people's calls.
Noel called me at 2am last night to tell me this about Alex .. and I didn't call him back until an hour ago.
I'd imagine they'll keep them both. One is good on offense, one is good on D. And then just see what happens when Finley/Barry return. Yesterday Pop said Finley/Barry might be another five days or so.
