Spurs don't have the DET 2nd anymore, they traded it to TOR in the Young deal.
After an exchange in another thread, I started thinking about the cascade effects of this pick, and decided to do some research.
Player Spurs Seasons Spurs W/S George Hill 3 14.9 Kawhi Leonard 7 55.6 Davis Bertans 3 9.4 Demar DeRozan 3 21.0 Keldon Johnson 3 8.0 Jakob Poeltl 4 20.6 Thad Young 1 0.9 Total W/S 130.4
That's a lot of value for one pick over time. When you pair it with the Detroit pick in the upcoming draft, we still have residual value.
2022 Toronto FRP
2025 Chicago FRP
2025 Chicago SRP.
So, for a 26 pick, and what looks to be one in the 31-33 range, we've gotten a ton of productivity and some future value/productivity, plus there could be some more future value if either Keldon or Poeltl is moved.

Right, which led to the listed Toronto FRP. I was pretty clear that was outgoing.
Nice post. The Spurs did a decent job recovering what they could when Kawhi lost his mind.
That said, how would you rate the moves starting from the Kawhi deal to Toronto, not counting the fortuitous Hill for Kawhi trade? We know trading Hill for the rights to Kawhi was an unparalleled coup.
Well, it's 60 W/S, and adding the Detroit pick that we traded to Toronto, 2 FRPs and a SRP remaining, plus any remaining growth for Keldon and Poeltl, or value from trading them.
I think people probably initially underrated our haul from trading GHill, and also underrated the trade return from shipping out Kawhi. No one knew what Kawhi would become, but no one knew how we could grow the initial return from Toronto into more, either. When the dust cleared, for Demar and a high SRP, we got 2 more FRPs and a SRP for an unrestricted FA!
The G Hill trade was excellent. Don’t agree in the Leonard/DDR trade but it does seem to get better as time elapses. Important to note we gave up 5mm cash and Danny Green in that trade. The DDR to the Bulls trade is looking decent and fair to all parties but lets not forget DDR needed us to facilitate that trade and there was a short term cost included in eating Aminu’s 10mm. That cost is less relevant as we had little other use for that cap space but it’s still an opportunity cost.
We’ll never know what other trades were on the table for Leonard at the time but I’m pretty confident PATFO’s unwillingness to deal with rivals hurt his value.

In addition, the Spurs managed to steer both neph and DeRozan away from the Lakers, which is like steering them away from a whirlpool. When the league wants players to go to LAL, it usually happens.
True. We did lose Danny Green, too, just to throw that out there.
Kawhi's had 27.0 in regular season W/S and Danny 9.8, in the seasons since leaving the Spurs. With Kawhi pulling up lame last year in the playoffs, and sitting out yet another regular season, you have to wonder how much more teams will get out of him moving forward. And Danny looks pretty done. Even when Kawhi is playing, the level of load management and general ass-kissing required to keep him happy would grow tiresome for teammates and coaches I would think.
The Spurs needed to get younger, even if Kawhi had stayed, so perhaps his leaving just sped up the inevitable. I agree, though, that the Spurs exchanged assets and acquired additional assets later better than a lot of people realize.
Have you seen the gravy train the Lakers have given up for AD and Westbrook? Would have been nice to get in on some of that….
Different cir stances. Kawhi was brutal about the whole situation. No one knew if he was healthy or would stay where he was sent. The Lakers offered garbage.
I also think Brandon Ingram is overrated. His All-Star appearance the next year was a joke.
There may be a similar tree from the Derrick White pick.
Thats what I was thinking. #29 pick already turned into mid 20s pick, pick swap, and two players. I think Richardson will be flipped for another asset.
Noah Magrano posted something astounding on Twitter. Langford’s career opponent FG% is 37.7. If they can work on getting his body right, and get him doing almost anything on offense, and he was drafted as a scorer, he’ll be a good get.
Good thread and nice to have in one place to refer back in the future.
Had Bert been flipped for actual value, as opposed to Carroll, this would be even more impressive.
It's like that game where you try and turn a paperclip into a house through trades..
I didn’t mention Green, because he never cost us assets in the first place. I also think he would not have been retained anyway had he not opted in. He and Pop had about reached the end of the road.
Danny Green and 5mm cash was easily worth a first on it's own but I agree that over the longer term the wins outweigh the losses. Still smoothing out the big L we took on the Kawhi/DDR trade doesn’t makie it a win.
