Yes, its possible.
I sure do hope so...
I don't want to have to keep losing in order to keep stocking up on premium young talent.
Yes, its possible.
Sure hope so, we have a few of their 1st round picks.
the thing is, they have no incentive to intentionally bottom out. so the odds of them trading Trae, letting Murray go, etc, is next to nothing
They’re not great now. But the fact that the Spurs hold so many of their picks probably stops them from blowing it all up and starting over for a while. They’re stuck in 40-win limbo.
Blowing it up would include monetizing Trae, which should recoup those picks and more.
And if they really want to blow it up, they also can trade Murray and basically be in the situation spurs were before this draft... Lots of picks and cap space. Now is there a generational player in the next coming years?

The team that acquires Trae will be deep lottery?
The next big one is supposedly Cameron Boozer. I believe he will be in the draft the year we have the pick swap with Atlanta.
Trae is not the piece to build on. They should move Trae while he still has value.
ATL in a weird spot. They have a franchise player in Trae, but he’s not good enough to lead them to the promised land as #1 option. I don’t see them trading him anytime soon.
I think they still make the playoffs again next season for sure. But once they inevitably lose in the first or second round, they might want to change things up.
Trae Young just signed his extension last year so he’s there for the long haul. Dejounte is an UFA next Summer though. I assume they’re going to want to re-sign him, but the pairing with Trae last year didn’t work as well as ATL had hoped it would. Trae is so ball-dominant that it left Dejounte standing around watching a lot. He still had a solid season at 20 PPG on 46% shooting, but his assists, rebounds, and steals were all down considerably from his last season in San Antonio. Will be interesting to see what they do there, but all signs point to ATL re-signing him. They won’t just let him walk for nothing.
Bogdan Bogdanovic is expected to decline his Player Option and become a Free Agent. He’ll be highly coveted as he’s proven himself to be a reliable shooter. That would be a huge loss for them.
Clint Capela is also a Free Agent this Summer I believe. He’s far from a great player, but losing him would also really affect their defense. I think they re-sign him.
Jonn Collins has 2 years left on his deal but the second year is a Player Option… that’s where things get murky. Something tells me he wants out of ATL, and he’ll have plenty of suitors on the open market. He’ll be 27 and entering his prime most likely. I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded him next year before the deadline. He’s the guy to keep an eye on.
They still have some young talented role players in DeAndre Hunter, AJ Griffin, and Saddiq Bay. Will be interesting to see how they develop.
hawks reddit response to that bleacher report article about lakers wanting Trae is funny
obviously, that type of trade makes no sense for hawks, but saw multiple posts say they wouldnt even trade Trae for Wemby![]()
Could be a kawhi situation where they force out
???????
Many of the details regarding Atlanta's contracts in this post are just straight up wrong. The link below shows their payroll.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/ATL.html
bogdanovic declined his player option, but that was part of his 4 year extension he signed
capela signed a 2 year deal and is under contract through 24-25
they dont have any notable free agents this year. they are also currently above the tax threshold so they only currently have the ty taxpayer MLE to work with (and some trade exceptions, largest one being about 7 mil)
It was 2 details lol but yea my bad. Was looking at their roster 3-4 days ago but didn’t do a deep dive on Brogdon and Capela, just read what I posted. Either way, ATL is still sorta stuck in no man’s land right now imo. They made the 7-Seed this season and I don’t really see then making a big jump next year. Still expect them to be First around fodder next season. Then I think there’ll be some turnover on their roster.
ATL is going to be pretty dead in free agency. in the tax. already have 15 guys under contract. they do have a few guys they can waive with non-guaranteed contracts. not enough to change their cap situation, but just potentially some spots they can fill. but with only having the taxpayer MLE available, not much of a path to make impactful changes.
their only way to make any kind of play in the offseason is by trading trae/collins/capela/bogdanovic, but they literally just extended bogdanovic like 2 months ago
You never know because some organizations are just not good, like the T-wolves. They find themselves into losing. I always see Atlanta as a meh team. They are rarely the worst and rarely the best, but always somewhere in the middle. If we got a lottery pick out of them, then it would be at the back end of the lottery. And if they are in a scenario where they have to trade Young or Murray, or both, then they'll get a haul to replace all the assets they traded to the Spurs.
between Young/Collins/Capela/Hunter/Bogdanovic, the hawks are already going to have a cap number of 130.7mil going into the 2024 offseason, with Murray being UDFA , and his cap hold would eat into whatever miniscule cap space they otherwise would have. they have a mediocre pick this year, they do get an extra pick next year as well (lottery protected from kings).
they basically have to make a trade unless they think this group of 6 + pending draft picks are going to take them to the promised land
Aren't their low picks protected? What am i missing here?
The picks we got from ATL are completely unprotected. 2025, 2026 swap option, 2027.
Quinn will have something to say about it, including whether Tre remains on the team.
Check a Hawks forum
His contract makes moving him challenging.
4 years remaining at 40 to 48 million
Can easily see DJM bailing after next year.
This is the scenario that I hope for. By that time the Spurs are a contender and are able to add a lottery pick to the roster who develops into an All-Star. Super team![]()
