He beat Kobe narrowly, 51% to 49%, which is amazing considering Kobe's god tier status in China

    • Won 5 rings with the least amount of high draft picks, all-stars, all-NBA's, and luxury tax dollars per ring. Someday people will look back and see how absurd it is to win 5 rings for a small budget team like San Antonio, and that franchise, Popovich included, really is nothing special without Tim
    • Only player to beat two first-team all-NBA to ring without any all-NBA on his own team. 2003 vs Shaq/Kobe, 2007 vs Nash/Amare. It is absolutely insane that Hakeem was the only other player to accomplish this one-time in 1994 vs Stockton and Malone (in 1995 he had Drexler who was third team all-NBA)
    • He is wins before $tats, allows teammates to play the way they are most comfortable to play, maximizes their strength, and do things his teammates can't do. Parker and Ginobili really wouldn't have had the same career without a superstar willing to set screens for them and watch them make mistakes to grow. Never cared about his own $tats.
    • Like Bill Russell, not a spectacular 1v1 player for an all-time great, but he offers so much intangibles in a 5v5 setting, understands how to maximize his impact on both end of the floor more than anyone else. The ultimate top lane in League of Legends, tank in Overwatch, it is not about kills, it is about positioning, situation awareness, doing the right thing at right time. He offers more than Shaq and Hakeem in a 5v5 setting even if he most likely loses to both 1v1.
    • 1000 wins with same franchise, never missed playoffs, even during rebuild windows
    • 12-5 finals record vs LeBron, beat LeBron in his prime when he was 38 years old, and have 1 extra ring. Imagine if Bird beat MJ when he was late 30's and won more rings overall, nobody in their right mind will think MJ is higher rated than Bird

Kobe also got very favorable ratings.

    • Doesn't pass tough shots at end of clock to role players to pad his stats, so while his personal TS doesn't look as pretty as say, LeBron, his team is more effective overall
    • Shaq is overrated as a main carry, he was swept more times than any other all-time greats, and he had very strong teams without Kobe. Yes with the right position, he is completely unstoppable, but to get him the ball in the right position against traps, fronts and double teams is not easy. He needs a scorer who can digest high number of positions, checks opponent's best guards to cover for his weakness to pick-and-roll. 01/02 Lakers was absolutely 1A and 1B especially during the tougher part of the playoffs in the western conference
    • True two-way player, shuts down opposing stars, doesn't rest on defense
    • Back-to-back rings and three straight finals appearances with only Paul Gasol (third team all-NBA), a very modest roster compared to LeBron/KD teams. Paul was also given way more room to play the game he excels at, compared to say Bosh/Love

    So, what do you think?

The NBA is China’s rag. It’s crazy how no one can say anything critical of China.

As backwards as China is I will say that their fanbase tends to be more logical than American NBA fans when it comes to the NBA.

That strategy’s so dumb now that the 3 ball is so easy to hit. When it was the exception and not the norm it made more sense.

That’s one area where I don’t agree with Pop’s coaching decisions.

Also, on GOAT conversations regarding Timmy, the Chinese message board folks make great points. No one other than Tim could have done what he did in San Antonio for as long as he did it here. San Antonio fit him, and he fit San Antonio. He may not have flourished in a market like LA or New York, either. The perfect basketball union.

To be fair, Pop is also working with a low budget roster that doesn't have much talents. On paper 13 and 14 Spurs was simply no match for the Heat in raw talents. Pop takes gambles because he has to, he is not Phil Jackson who always has the strongest hand, sometimes it backfires.

2013 was not one of the two I was referencing, but benching Timmy in the previous game made that miss possible.

Did you watch the Last Dance? Phil Jackson bailed like a rather than stick around for a rebuild in Chicago. Then he coached the Kobe-Shaq Lakers. Sounds like that makes him a terrible coach, riding the coat tails of great players what a scrub.

I appreciate Pop sticking around through the rebuild, that's what character looks like. And the players love him, which could pay dividends in free agency yet.

Phil Jackson burns out his lineups, he pit them against each other and there is always a whipping boy who gets sacrificed for the short term success of the team. He enables bullies like Jordan and Kobe to rip the team apart. it sometimes pay off, it sometimes backfires. Players like Dennis Hopson could have been a decent player, Kukoc was ostracised in the locker room to stroke the egos of Jordan and Pippen, Horace Grant was bullied mercilessly by Jordan to the point he'd rather go to Orlando than to stay. In LA, he let Kobe act like a giant ass around "lesser" players and it was Shaq who had to go protect the players, MVPau got the brunt of the criticisms, unfairly, and Jackson spurred it on to keep Kobe in check.

Pop on the other hand, works with the players to build a unit together, let players grow and prosper. He is the longest lasting coach without players tuning him out for a reason. The only ones who really had bad things to say about him were Kawhi (proven to be an antisocial autist), Stephen Jackson (mentally unbalanced) and Bob Hill (loser).

I like that Pop doesn’t let superstars run the team and Spurs culture is one I’d take any day. Jackson was a fit for those teams but that’s not us at all and I like it that way. Enjoy the ride while you can, it’s been a great one.

Wemby is very high on Pop, that’s what’s most important.

Duncan was 37 and in a game 7, he was simply out of gas after a grueling series and he was still the best player for the Spurs in that game.

24 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. Held Bosh to 0 points.
