You can look up their profile and it will tell you if they are on or not and what thread they are looking at.

You can add people to your buddy list and then it puts a "+" next to their name on the who's online, so you can see them online.
Because no one would add you to their list
Oops sorry. Let me add you to my buddy list right now...
Click on anyone's name. Then it gives you the option to add them to your buddy list or ignore list.
I have no buddies.
She's on my list.
