If Chiefs Want Edwards, They're Not Saying Yet

On a day when Vermeil, the Kansas City Chiefs' coach, said his goodbyes, the general managers of the Chiefs and the Jets talked, though apparently not to each other.

Carl Peterson, the general manager of the Chiefs, held a news conference after Vermeil's emotional retirement address yesterday. He was asked if he planned to seek permission from the Jets to talk to Coach Herman Edwards about Kansas City's coaching vacancy.

Peterson and Edwards are longtime friends, and Peterson has hired Edwards once before, as a scout for the Chiefs in 1990. Their close ties have fueled speculation that Edwards, who has two years remaining on his contract with the Jets, is the leading candidate to succeed Vermeil.

"I am not going to comment on that speculation or who I am talking to, who I may talk to or who I may not talk to," Peterson said. "I just would prefer to keep that confidential."

Later in the afternoon, Jets General Manager Terry Bradway said during his weekly radio show that nobody from the Chiefs had contacted him about Edwards.

Bradway, who assisted Peterson in Kansas City before coming to the Jets, sounded as curious as any Jets fan to see where this dance would go from here.

"Carl will have some options," Bradway said. "We'll see what happens."

Peterson did acknowledge that he had interviewed Al Saunders, the Chiefs' offensive coordinator and the popular choice among the Kansas City players to be Vermeil's successor.

"We had a very good interview yesterday, and it's not concluded," Peterson said.

The Chiefs would have to give up compensatory draft picks to wrest Edwards from the Jets. Peterson parted with a second- and third-round pick five years ago to hire Vermeil, who was not coaching but was still under contract with the St. Louis Rams.

Peterson refused to say whether he would give up a first-round draft pick to get a coach, which is what he would probably have to do if he were to hire Edwards.

"Any time I have to part with a No. 1 choice, it's painful," Peterson said.

Reached at home, Edwards repeated what he had been saying all along. "I intend to be back as the Jets' coach," he said.

As question marks swirl around Edwards, Donnie Henderson, who finished his second season as the Jets' defensive coordinator, is among the candidates for the New Orleans Saints' coaching vacancy. The Saints fired Jim Haslett on Monday and received permission from the Jets to interview Henderson this week.

Henderson told reporters last week that becoming a head coach would "always be a goal until I get it."

    Extra points

The goal of Jets punter Ben Graham was to carve out a second career in the N.F.L. after starring in the Australian Football League, and he is well on his way. After posting the second-highest net punting average in team history (37.9 yards) as a rookie this season, Graham signed a multiyear extension with the Jets yesterday.

Chiefs get NFL's OK to hire Jets' Edwards By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star
The Chiefs were given permission today by the NFL to hire Herman Edwards as their new head coach. The league approved the terms of compensation that would free Edwards from his contract as head coach of the New York Jets. The Chiefs will send the Jets a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft.
The next step is for Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson to agree on terms of a contract with Edwards. Peterson was scheduled to talk today to Edwards’ agent, Gary O’Hagan.

I'm looking forward to having Herm be our coach. No I don't think he's a great coach. But I do think he's pretty good. I think he's a pretty stand up character guy. I think he has a whole lot more to work with in KC than he had in NY.

I beleive that he is familiar enough w/ Vermeil/Chiefs and how they coach. He should immedaitly fit-in w/ our team, but be different enough to offer a new message, a new twist to what we do.

And to be quite honest, I don't think there are any better options available. With so many teams needing a coach this year, I think we got the best...my second choice would have been to promote Saunders....but I think he may have offered to much of the same ol' same ol' that the Chiefs have seen for 5 years under Vermeil.

Vermeil is obviously very well respected in this league. I think Herm has some respect...but not a whole lot. What is interesting is that both coaches have been w/ their teams for 5 years. During that time, Vermeil went 44-36 while Herm went 39-41. Those are pretty close numbers. And when you consider that the Chiefs have had one of, if not the best offenses during that span of time, I find Vermeil severly underachieved. It was time for a new coach.

I think Herm will be a good replacement. His background on defense will be a bonus. Hopefully he has some success soon, as our team is getting old quickly.

The Chiefs getting anyone who can even spell defense would be a step up.

    Dang.

If Herm brings in a competent O coordinator, and improves that D.

Chiefs would vault back into SB contention.

    BTW, speaking of the Chefs.

What do they do with Priest Holmes??

    Is he retiring?

If he wants to come back, are they trading him??

    Curious..

Larry Johnson seems to be the real deal.

I think Priest needs to read the writing on the wall.

He's had a great ride, but running backs his age don't come back from the string of injuries he's had.

I had the pleasure of seeing my Chiefs this past weekend in KC and Larry Johnson in person is more impressive than the TV. This guy is the real deal, ability to go around and through people. Hes going to rush for 3000 yards in the first half of the season next year. Maybe 2100, but with Herm on board now, I hope we can sure up our defense and make a run at the Super Bowl next year.

I think you are going to be very mistaken. I expect a much better team under Herm.

Also, you do realize that under Vermiel, we only made the playoffs ONCE in 5 Years right?
