Malik wins hands down. Malik is closer to my age and I connected with him immediately.

Though I respect and like Avery a lot too, I've always seen him more as a great player from my dad's generation of basketball- not someone quite as relevant to me as Malik, Timmy, and the guys we have now.

I can't answer that. That would be like asking me which of my two sons I love most (I don't have any kids, that's just an example). I love Malik and Avery equally, for different reasons.

To a Spurs fan, isn't that like saying which one of your kids do you like better?

Malik was more frustrating, more highs and lows, than AJ...but isn't that how that goes in a real family? They are both Spurs "family" to me.

Malik was all heart and played his damn body out every night, hustled for every loose ball and and every rebound...ive yet to see his enthusiasm in another Spur since his departure.

Malik. He was always my favorite ex-Spur. A good guy, from what I understand a great teammate, and plays with a lot of heart. AJ was a decent PG, but rather one-dimensional, and a little to preachy and evangelical to make me comfortable with him as a person.

Mario Elie would be high on my list of fave ex-Spurs, BTW. And Sean Elliot probably tops out the list, or maybe Steve Kerr.

Avery was about the least talented starting PG this league has ever seen (next to Vinny, of course). Yet, Avery was an absolutely integral cog and motivator in a championship squad - the ultimate NBA feel-good story, all things considered.

Malik was special to SA, AJ was something even more.

I agree with you about AJ. Talent is something that occurs naturally. Athletes can operate on talent alone for a time, but eventually they all have to work at their craft, develop it to the next level. That's when most natural athletes quit because they are not willing to work.

Timmy, Tony, and Manu are perfect examples of those with natural talent who are willing to add the work necessary to elevate their game; Allen Iverson, Chauncy Billups, and Steve Nash are some other examples. Bruce Bowen is an example of someone with moderate talent who is willing to work his rearend off, on his own time, to develop his game and make himself invaluable to his team.

Avery did not have a lot of natural talent, and yet he got the job done. Avery's ability was a product of hard work, dedication, will-power, research, repe iveness, practice/practice/practice, and sheer love of the game. Avery knows for a fact that anyone can do it if they want to badly enough. Very few, without that luck-of-the-draw natural talent, do though.
