If the Spurs win tonight and the Lakers lose to Dallas tomorrow night, the Spurs will finally overtake the Lakers for the best all-time NBA record.

These calculations are according to the linked website which appears (by my observation) to be updated daily. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/

Right now, the Lakers have a winning percentage of .614659 (3195-2003) with the Spurs at .614505 (1881-1180). The Celtics are a distant third at .590. No one else is even close.

A Spurs win tonight puts them at .614630, still behind the Lakers.

But if the Lakers lose, they drop to .614541.

If it happens, it will likely go unreported by anyone. But I think it significant because the Lakers have owned the best NBA record for many years. Until now (maybe).

Mind you, this is not just the Tim Duncan era but all-time best in the NBA, with both "Showtime" and Jerry West/Elgin Baylor/Wilt included.

Ah, nevermind. I see you're not counting the ABA years.

I'm talking NBA winning percentage, not NBA/ABA combined.

Trust me, so are the NBA record-keepers. They count the ABA for nothing.

Is this regular season only or are playoffs included?

Either way, we should be ahead of the Lakers by season's end, and we have a winning record against every other NBA team.

But if you just count NBA years, Lakers are actually at .628 though.

Then the number of "NBA" championships that the Lakers claim goes down from 16, also. Think Staples Center would go for that?

In reality, the BAA and the NBA were one continuous league including the Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, etc. Essentially one league became the other and changed its name. That was never the case with the ABA and NBA.

More to the point, that's only if you count the "Los Angeles" Lakers NBA record and ignore Minneapolis' record in the NBA. Heck, if you do that OKC Thunders' short run is the best "all-time" record in the NBA. You have to look at two criteria: (1) the franchise's history (2) in the NBA.

In fact, if you only look at the "LA" Lakers, the number of NBA championships they can claim drops from 16 to 11. I'm pretty sure they'll never do that.

The Duncan era has really been insane when you look at it in broad perspective.

A few years ago, the Spurs were above .500 against every NBA team during Tim's career, but were only barely there as to a few teams. Fast forward a couple of years and you get this: in the Duncan Era (from 1997-98 through April 2, 2014), the Spurs are at least 5 games over .500 against every other franchise in the NBA (the closest remains Milwaukee; the Spurs are 18-13 against the Bucks in the Duncan era).

In other words, the Spurs could lose every game for the remainder of this season and every game next season and would still be over .500 against every other NBA franchise at the end of the 2014-15 NBA season.

    Yep.

I might have underplayed the point a little bit, too. In the Duncan era, 24 of the 29 NBA teams are at least 10 games under .500 against the Spurs in the regular season. Only the Bucks (18-13), Lakers (34-28), Pistons (20-12), Heat (20-11), and Knicks (20-11) are within 10 games of .500 against the Spurs during that span.

The Warriors are 45 games under .500 against the Duncan Spurs; the Clippers are 42 games under .500 against the Duncan Spurs and the Grizzlies are 36 games under .500 against the Duncan Spurs.

    Here's the complete list:

    Atlantic Division
    BOS 24-7
    BRK 24-7
    NYK 20-11
    PHI 23-10
    TOR 24-8

    Southeast Division
    ATL 26-5
    CHA 17-2
    MIA 20-11

    It finally happened last night.

The Spurs overtook the Lakers for the NBA's best all-time record.

The Spurs are 1882-1181 for a winning % of .614430.

The Lakers are 3195-2005 for a winning % of .614423.

As of now the Spurs are the most successful franchise in NBA history in terms of wins/losses. Step aside Lakers and Celtics.

Never thought this could happen. But it did happen over the last 38 years.
