    Cowboys release Keyshawn Johnson

    By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

    STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

IRVING -- Receiver Keyshawn Johnson has been released by the Cowboys, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Johnson is a due $1 million roster bonus by 3 p.m. He was informed by owner Jerry Jones at about 2:30 p.m. of the team’s decision to not pay the bonus and release him.

“It’s a business,” Johnson said. “I am thankful they brought me here. I feel good. I get a chance to be a free agent for the first time. If you want a receiver that is going to get it done. I am available.”

Johnson, who will represent himself in free agency, said Jones told him that the Cowboys would consider re-signing him once he tested the market and determined his value. Johnson said he would give the Cowboys an opportunity to do so.

A 10-year veteran, Johnson caught 141 passes and 12 touchdowns the past two years for the Cowboys.

He led the Cowboys in receptions in 2005 with 71 catches.

Were the Cowboys expected to release Keyshawn? This move comes as a surprise to me.

Keyshawn wouldn't be a bad fit for the Texans.

Apparently Keyshawn has been squawking about more money and was due a bonus if he was still on the roster after today.

Both sides have said there is a chance he will still come back with a new deal. This was more about his roster bonus due tomorrow.

I think TO will be a Cowboys by tomorrow morning though.

There's a lot of talk that Keyshawn will wind up in New England and Eric Moulds is going to be a Cowboy up here in Dallas.

At least the Cowboys won't be wasting a draft pick on an receiver.

I hope they don't get that Terrell Owens guy.

I wish they could find a new Bob Hayes or a Billy Joe Dupree

Moulds is not the same receiver he was a couple years ago. But that's probably because he had no quarterback to throw him the ball. I'd like to think that a Moulds reuniting with Bledsoe could equal success. But we thought the same with Price and Bledsoe last year.

Ask the Eagles if they'd rather have had Moulds instead of Owens.

Keyshawn and TO wouldn't get along.

TO knows this is his last chance or hes gonna be gone the way of the Sprewell.

    That simple.

TO comes to Dallas, he'll toe the line, and be a good boy.

TO to Dallas would, IMO, put them back in front.

The way I understood it Keyshawn was released so he could go be a free agent. He thinks he's worth more money than the Cowboys want to pay him. The team has not ruled out re-signing him if he doesn't get an offer he wants. He and TO could conceivably both be in Dallas, although it's unlikely unless the Cowboys throw some receivers around in trades.

The Cowboys will drop TO like a bad habit without a second thought if he acts up in any way that hurts the team. He's never been on a team with a personality bigger than his own. He'll get tons of leeway as long as the team is winning. He'll be eaten alive and his carcass thrown aside if they aren't.

I don't give a how good he is or how desperate we are for a wide reciever, he should never be a cowboy. That he pulled at Texas Stadium was bull . It reeked of total disrespect and a lack of class. I never want to see that er in a cowboy uniform. NEVER.

As someone who thought George Teague should have been immediately enshrined in the Ring of Honor for pasting TO, I have a hard time disagreeing with that.

And yet that er will be wearing the Star. Bull , total bull . Worse decision Jones ever allowed to be made: bringing that lowlife to Texas Stadium.
