i don't think van gundy is the problem in houston, but i also wouldn't be surprised if they made a change.
# NBA scouts have to love the defensive skills, energy and offensive potential of Florida Gators 6-foot-11 sop re star Joakim Noah. Last year at this time, he was coming off his freshman season as a seldom-used subs ute. Now he'll be a lock lottery pick in June's NBA draft if he decides to declare. He'd be my No. 1 pick. ... Have you ever heard a manager or coach in any pro sport consistently bad mouth his players the way Larry Brown does with the New York Knicks? Sometimes I think he'd be happy to walk away from this mess if the team offered to buy him out. This is the first season of his reported five-year, $10-million contract. ... Coach Jeff Van Gundy has one year left on his contract with the disappointing Houston Rockets and there is speculation that he'll be replaced this summer. His major problem has been seldom having gimpy stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady in the lineup simultaneously.

There hasn't really been talk around Houston of Van Gundy going. Everyone pretty much acknowledges that it's been an injury-plagued year, and there isn't enough of a team outside of McGrady/Yao to make it. Van Gundy has done well enough with what he has, and Yao's improvement is noticeable. But he still doesn't have the stamina for a full game yet. That can't be chalked up to Van Gundy. The trades didn't work out as well as they hoped, but their draft pick did.
So . . . eh, I think they are willing to give him a chance.
Firing Van Gundy would be stupid.
His problem is health, and he has no point guard, he has a over paid bench PF (sounds familiar) and no depth
Van Gundy's team outside of Yao and Mcgrady is pretty pathetic.
But, according to some, they were gonna challenge the Spurs for the division.
I only know Joakim Noah from the NCAA playoffs.
He seems very young and thin and clumsy, all of which would be improved by finishing college. He doesn't need the NBA $Ms. His father Yannick is very wealthy, as is probably his mother.
I think he's more of a hustle and fire player, at least at college level, than an athlete. I'm not sure that adolescent hustle/fire would stay with him in the pros.
I'd hate to see both Van Gundy's canned in a season for questionable reasons. I don't know how much of a hand he had in sculpting the personnel moves they made, but whoever did should be the one looking at losing their job. They traded Mike James, essentially the only healthy member of their back court and a big part of their late season surge, for Rafer Alston (who immediately broke his leg. Not that that's the Rockets fault but the move was questionable all over. The Stromile Swift pickup didn't pan out, and getting DA was about as dumb a move as could be made. "Well, we've got nine guards on the injured list. We should get a guy who could break his neck putting away his groceries!"
The funny thing is that for the few games where Yao and McGrady were both healthy the Rockets looked damn good, but that was only for about 10 games this year.
Nice.He seems very young and thin and clumsy, all of which would be improved by finishing college.
I wonder if Boutons is related to Mel Kiper.
picky picky,
Are you people on crack? Van Grunty had TMac and Yao for most all of last season and all of the playoffs. Before that he tried to make Steve Francis a GruntBall offensive doldrum.
Reg season his idiotic ordering of GruntyBall type offense lead to so many Rocket games being in the 80s it was ridiculous. The Houston fans were shouting for his ouster at games. It was only the Spurs chocking away a 8 point lead with 30 seconds (or whatever it was) that saved Grunty last season. After that game he finally lightened up and let the Rockets offense have some freedom. They started scoring 100+ regularly and won 95% of those 100+ games.
In the playoffs they win the 1st two at Dallas then end up losing in 7? They were jobbed on a few end of game calls in one of the close losses but still, losing 2 games in a row at home after being up 2-0? Sure the Spurs lost 4 straight to the Flamers but one was the 0.4 miracle. After winning the previous year.
How did Van Grunty last this long?
He is young and thin for sure.. Clumsy? I can think of a couple bigs on the Spurs who make him look like Barishnakov (sp?)
Van Gundy sucks, istn't he voted worst coach by players?
and Noah is a skinny dude, NBA is a whole different ballgame, he'd be manhandled daily. He could be good, but it would take him a loooong time
noah to me is not even close to being a good 6 man in the nba
I have only seen Noah in the tournament, and he definitely has the potential, considering there is always room for a big man with any bit of athleticism. I also admire his emotion. But I can't shake the feeling that he just happened to play some of the best games of his life at just the right time. I know overachieving is a bit harsh, but maybe someone can change my mind. I guess I'm just skeptical of the media darlings that emerge out of the tourney. I wish him the best though.

is he that much skinner than camby when he came out? no.
to me, Joakim Noah = Tayshaun Prince 5-6 yeras ago
He didn't look to me like nearly the athlete that Camby was/is though. He's long and fairly quick and coordinated, but I wasn't too impressed with his hops.
He ain't that skinny!
JVG runs an offense that makes the one Pop ran, pre-PJ, look like the Suns current model. Boring doesn't begin to cover it.
Van Gundy does suck.
Damn, Noah will become an all star.noah to me is not even close to being a good 6 man in the nba
Thanks for the headsup Ducks!!!!
By the way, ducks, where did this come from? It doesn't appear to be in your native language.![]()
