    Toronto 108, Detroit 103

    April 14, 2006

TORONTO (AP) -- Mike James scored 20 of his career-high 39 points in the fourth quarter to help the Toronto Raptors end a 10-game losing streak with a 108-103 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.

James, who scored Toronto's last 13 points, surpassed his previous career high of 38, set Nov. 16 against Philadelphia.

He went 18-for-18 from the line -- making all 12 of his attempts in the fourth quarter.

Morris Peterson added 20 points for the Raptors, who won their first game since All-Star forward Chris Bosh suffered a season-ending thumb injury on March 26.

Chauncey Billups had 15 points -- on 6-for-6 shooting from the field -- and added 10 assists for the Pistons, who already clinched homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

Detroit rested its starters in the fourth quarter.

The Pistons need one win in their final three games to finish with the winningest season in franchise history -- surpassing the 63 victories they had in 1988-89 en route to winning the first of two straight NBA les.

James' 3-pointer gave Toronto a 96-90 lead with 2:40 left.

Lindsey Hunter's 3-pointer cut the lead to one with 1:28 remaining, but James made two free throws and a layup to make it 102-99 with 55 seconds left.

The Pistons closed within one three times in the final minute, but James answered with two free throws each time.

Trailing 106-103 with 11 seconds left, Carlos Delfino turned the ball over by tripping, allowing James to seal the victory with two free throws after being fouled with 3.3 seconds left.

Billups had 10 of Detroit's first 20 points.

    Notes

Toronto's skid was its longest since dropping 12 straight from Dec. 18, 2002-Jan. 10, 2003. ... Mike James won a le with Detroit in 2004. James and Rasheed Wallace joked with each throughout the game. Wallace attempted a 3-pointer with his left hand in the third quarter. He missed badly. ... Attendance was 19,800 -- Toronto's fifth sellout of the season.

It's over. Pistons have already secured HCA throughout the playoffs. I'm sure Flip will be resting the starters these last 3 games.

Did a single starter see a minute in the fourth quarter? No. The Pistons had a lineup of Carlos Delfino, Lindsey Hunter, Tony Delk, Jason Maxiell, and Mo Evans down the stretch with Mo playing power forward and 6'7" Maxiell playing center.

If Carlos Delfino could've driven full-court without tripping over his own shoes, the Pistons would've had a chance to tie the game. Oh, well. Nothing to cry over.

You know what I get a kick out of? All season other teams' fans have been talking about starter minutes this and starter minutes that. Now, they're all averaging 35-36 minutes each (certainly not a lot by any strech anyways), AND they have over a week "off" before the playoffs to play about 20 minutes a game.

The Pistons are looking to be the most well rested team in the playoffs.

Given the meaninglessness of the game, I don't think it's neccesary to make whiny excuses about why we lost. who cares?

No doubt. I'm actually proud - it took a career night from Mike James to beat our scrubs.

Yeah, I love the fight they put up. And I have no problem seeing the Raps win a meaningless game like that off us, lol. And Mike James? He can score 40 any night for all I care, as he's on my fantasy team.... lol, yes, this is the best I've felt after a loss all year

Who's whining? I was saying the Pistons 8-12th men managed to stay in the game until there was about 5 seconds left.
