Sony gets Unreal 3 engine for PlayStation 3
Gaming The graphics console war continues
SONY HAS been rather excited to tell us all that they’ve licensed the technology for the Unreal 3 engine from developers Epic Games. Through this agreement Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI) gets full sublicensing rights for the game engine and its development tools effective from 20th July 2005.
This means that we’ll be seeing the PlayStation 3 hardware pushed to the max, as the engine is one of the most advanced currently on the market, featuring a programmable shaders tool, physics engine, and GUI based physics attribution tool, along with various other tools, such as scenario development, movie scene development, animation and particle animation tools.
The most significant among these engines and tools are the programmable shaders. By effectively using this technology, developers will be able to reproduce photo-realistic images without going through a complicated calculation process.
A wealth of tools contained in the Unreal Engine 3 framework will enable developers to create content to a certain level without requiring specialist programming skills. An evaluation version of the Unreal Engine 3 will now become available for the PS3 developer community together with the Software Development Kit for the PS3. Frontline support will be provided by SCEI as opposed to Epic.
Vive la very cool graphics! µ
This thing is going to be a monster. I wonder what this thing will cost when it hits the stores?

Yeah GTA, NBA Live and Madden are going to kick ass in this system.
PSM is the worse gaming magazine ever so I wouldn't believe whatthey say.
Phat. I can't wait to play the Getaway and Mafia-type story games, not to mention NBA Live and Street etc. PS3 is gonna be the sh!t.
From what I read...the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be about the same graphics wise.

With all that i don't see how it will be as cheap as $300.
yeah but if you start going up to $400-500 this will be too high dollar for some. I will wait till the thing drops, I refuse to pay anymore than $200 for a gaming system.
thats true
every good system comes out around 300 any higher would be bad economics i think
the specs for this thing do sound amazing....but i dont really see myself paying over 300 dollars for a game system...how much better culd graphics possibly get? At what point is the return not worth it? They're already so awesome with ps2 and xbox, what are they going for? Do they want video games to look like real life?
yes actually.
The most significant among these engines and tools are the programmable shaders. By effectively using this technology, developers will be able to reproduce photo-realistic images without going through a complicated calculation process.
The only thing left to do is physically be in the game.
The companies actually don't make money on the system, the games are what bring in the cash. With the XBox, they actually lost money on each system they sold, they more than made it up with the games.
Yeah, thats my point, Butta. I dont think I'd like video games that looked like real life. For me, it has been to the point where graphics are good enough. I used to play RPGs and the CGI sequences for the more advanced systems were amazing. But I was instantly thinking, "this is good enough, " you know?
I dont want my video games and my madden and my ratchet and clank to look REAL....i like the video game virtual image looking crap.
Sometimes I bust out my old SuperNES just to immerse myself into the old school 32 bit style graphics. I see no real problem with any old system (except the NES, that really did suck hehe)
It's going to be like the Matrix whenever they finally find a way for us to get inside the game.
I would love for Sports games to be as authentic to real life as possible.
If you could do a matrix thing, that would be awesome.
Actually the XBOX division of Moicrosoft has seen only one profitable quarter since release.
According to Slashdot
Video Games = Worst Invention Ever
I still have a working Atari and Sega Genesis. I know what you mean though cause pretty soon it will be like playing a DVD video game with real life graphics. I agree I think it would take away from the gaming experience making it too life-like.
The Godfather is coming out later in the year, and i think thats going to kick some serious ass!![]()
God that controller looks horrible.
It looks like but I think it's pretty cool that it will use bluetooth, is rechargeable and will be able to support 7 controllers. I don't understand how the rumble feature will work if it's wireless.
PSX still PWNS everything.
I've heard that the 360 is supporting keyboard and mouse. I wonder if the ps3 will do the same. Then I wonder if they'll use the keyboard for fps. If they do, no doubt I will get at least the ps3 if not both. Then I won't have to worry about building another pc.
I have a playstation....that I never play.
PLAYSTATION 3 looks like a pile of , what were the idiots that design the box thinking about, doesnt even look good if you were to put it against a hi-fi system.
I might be gettin the nintendo EVOLUTION looks l33t, plus with all those old games that u can dl and play on it, and most of the games that are built for the xbox2/ps3 or PC will be on nintendo also, just that those other consoles dont have the nintendo mario games.
I don't give a about what the system looks like, as long as the games are sweet. It can look like a shoebox with a pile of on it for all I care.
