BAY SHORE, New York (AP) -- A U.S. soldier and his girlfriend found a winning lottery ticket on the ground at a convenience store Monday and turned it in to police, who were able to find its owner -- a $2,500 winner with no idea her lucky ticket was missing.

Sgt. Edward Boniberger and Marnie Hall found the ticket in a plastic case at a store, Suffolk County Police said. They tried to find the woman who had signed it, but when they could not, they took it to a police station.

Detectives then located Mary Ann Doerrbecker, who had not realized she had dropped the ticket, according to Detective Sgt. Thomas Groneman.

"She was shocked," Groneman said. Doerrbecker met the couple at the Third Precinct and offered them a reward, which they declined.

"He said, 'Absolutely not,"' Groneman said.

Boniberger said he told Doerrbecker she should donate something to charity instead.

"There's people out there who need it a lot more than I do," he said.

He said he would have wanted someone else to do the same if it had been him who lost the ticket.

Boniberger, of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, was stationed in Baghdad and returned to the United States in September 2005.

This can't be right. According to NBADan, Kerry and Murtha soldiers are baby killers. They didn't take the ladies baby and shoot it in the head?

My point was that 99% of soldiers are THE best people on the planet...

And it should not be a shock this person returned it.

But that people like the ones I mentioned get up EVERY DAY to on the image
of the US Soldier as.. not the hero or the solution to evil. .but the problem.

pff... man, you seriously have to have a mental problem, every post of yours gets more stupid by the minute. Yeah, soldiers can sometimes be admirable, but give me a ing break Vashner, they're not saints!

and your pathetic attempt at a political knock on the war critics you mentioned SHOULD BE POSTED IN THE POLITICAL FORUM!

i agree with you on both points, but i think more then sometimes soldiers can be admired for what they do, but yes at the same time not all soldiers are saints. its just a shame that half of the good things that the troops really do out here or back home goes unnoticed due to americas obsseion with failure, drama, and crime. But on the ocassion there are the feel good stories that make the air. but yes it is true that at the current time with everything goin on its the innocent murders of 30 iraqis, and the abu prison stories that make headlines, and the medical facilities we have set up, the school systems we have bettered, the civilians we have trained all go unheard about. but yes it is true we are not saints, i mean after all no one really is unless your name is john paul.

I disagree. The reason that the murder of 30 innocent people and the torture of war prisoners makes the headlines is because their gravity outweighs anything. Furthermore, I don't think we should group every soldier and say "them" or "we" like you're saying. Soldiers are people, they are humans, and like other humans they can be mean spirited motha fockers just like they can be role models.

The massacre of 30 innocent people is not the work of ALL soldiers, its the work of just a few, but those few should be held accountable and the nation be made aware of the atrocity they commited so that it never happens again. If that overshadows the good things the military does, well then so be it. I certainly would be mad if I were you, but not mad at the press, mad at those few who commited these crimes, for they have soiled the military's reputation as well as your own.

EDIT: However, getting back on topic, I do believe a soldier's discipline played a great part on this person giving back that lottery ticket. I think it was very commendable.
