Abu is capitalized. If you mean the "al" in al-Zarqawi, al- is a prefix that means "the", it's always lowercase.

al means 'the'. i.e., for al-Qaeda it means the qaeda, qaeda in Arabic is base, al-Qaeda translated means the base.
