CANTON, Ohio - A foundry worker was killed Thursday when he fell into an industrial pit and was covered in molten steel, authorities said.
Gordon Hickman, 41, was operating a massive ladle near the rim of the 35-foot pit just before noon when he fell into it, moments before the 2,600-degree steel was poured in, said Battalion Chief John Whitlatch of the Canton Fire Department.
A second employee at United Foundries Inc. suffered first- and second-degree burns over 20 percent of his body when went into the pit to try to save Hickman, Whitlatch said. The unidentified worker escaped the roughly 15-by-20-foot pit just as the steel was being poured.
It wasn't clear whether Hickman, of Homeworth, was killed by the fall or survived until the steel was poured. Whitlatch said the pour could not have been stopped in time.
Officials will have to wait several days until the steel cools to retrieve Hickman's remains.
The foundry produces large iron rollers used by steel mills. The company also has plants in Youngstown and South Africa.

Wow, that's what I was thinking. That's amazing that he had the instinct to jump in after and try and save the guy, while risking his own life.

I would've thrown him a cable or a rope or a chain.. but I seriously doubt I would've tried to go in after him.
That sucks.
I think a pretty cool way to die would be to jump off a cliff or something of that nature. You would either have a heart attack or die instantly when you hit the ground, but if you don't have a heart attack, the fall would be a thrill.

The top of my list is being buried alive. After that, burning to death, but not instantly, so I have a chance to feel my skin burn. This guy, with the hot steel, he probably melted instantly. That wouldn't be so bad because you wouldn't know what was happening.
What it boils down to (no pun intended) is I don't want to be tortured with it. When it happens, I don't want that pain to be the last sensation I experience and the last thought to be "oh, . This is how I'm going to die."
Getting attacked by a school of piranas would without a doubt suck ass.
