What is a max player? What makes a player worth maximum money? Assuming their are only a couple of Cuban's and Allen's in the leauge and you're not one of them, what is the bang you want, expect, need for your buck?

It's hard to pin it down, but to me, a max player is a franchise player or one of the best second options in the league. That's what it should be. The maximum salary should be reserved for the best players.

But in today's NBA, I realize that market value determines who should get the max. So in my mind, given the current economic conditions in the NBA, a max player is one with a performance level similar to other max players. If you look at most other max players in the game, they are franchise guys or players capable of putting up big numbers. Most max players are among the best in the game, and if a player of a lower level gets big dollars, most consider his contract to be a bad one for years to come.

A max player is a player who is getting paid the maximum dollars allowed by the CBA.

How can KVH make more than TD if they came into the league at the same time?

Again, how did this happen? Aren't both their max salaries stipulated by the CBA, and didn't Tim get a "max" contract from the Spurs?

More importantly, what idiot could have possibly thought KVH was worth a max deal after his original contract expired?

I think Tim got a little less money because he re-upped his contract early last summer.

WAY too many guys are making the max. Its an inflated market, players often get more than they are worth because desperate/stupid teams will take a chance and hope a player improves.

If players got paid for what they had done, instead of what they might do, the NBA would be in great shape in terms of player salaries. Teams would be able to keep their players without such worry and trouble, and teams would have much better continuity, and thus fan loyalty.

Because there is so much pressure to improve, teams take risks if they are not contenders, and hence, we get the mess the league is in now.
