Bethanie Mattek enjoyed just 52 minutes of action as she was blitzed 6-1 6-0 by Venus Williams. But, while the American made little impact on court, she did make a splash in the fashion department.

With knee-length white socks and tight football shorts, we described her in our live gamewatch as looking "like a young Bette Midler would if she had played midfield for Don Revie's Leeds team of the 1970s".

Mattek's defence was that she was "going for a soccer theme".

Of course this is not the first time the 21-year-old has earned the wrath of the fashion police.

At last year's US Open, she was fined for wearing a cowboy hat.

But Mattek admitted she only got interested in fashion when she moved from Wisconsin to Miami.

"I think I have a bit of different look," she added.

"Believe it or not, I used not to be fashion-conscious when I lived in Wisconsin."

Well, my friends and I dressed like that in the summer when I lived in Wisconsin too. But I was three.

We had knee-socks in HS basketball, with broad blue+white stripes, recommended by one of the fathers for other optical illusion of looking taller.

I don't know if the knee socks worked, but we were 118-22 over 4 seasons!
