CINCINNATI (AP) -- Running back Clinton Portis hurt his left shoulder on the Washington Redskins' opening series Sunday night and left the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

X-rays were negative, but the Redskins immediately sent him for an MRI test within the stadium to see if he had damaged tissue around the shoulder.

Portis opened by carrying for 8 yards, then blocked on pass plays. He didn't return for the next series, and headed for the locker room a little while later without his jersey to get the shoulder tested.

Portis started every game last season, running for a club-record 1,516 yards. He had nine 100-yard games, helping the Redskins win 10 games and reach the playoffs as a wild-card team.

Washington's second-string linebacker Chris Clemons sprained a ligament in his left knee late in the first quarter. Clemons, who started one game last season, had a brace placed on the knee before he was helped off the field. He didn't put weight on his left leg.

He hurt it putting a pretty good stick on Bengals CB Ratliff, who was returning an INT. Tough break for the Deadskins. I think he'll be okay, but these are the kind of injuries that can sometimes linger for an RB.

He better be fine, he's on my fantasy squad.

This is why I'll never understand people who schedule their fantasy drafts in early-mid August. A ton of Portis owners are now sweating bullets.

Portis is always getting hurt, especially when he was with Denver. He missed 4 games every year.

He started every game last year. Hopefully it turns out to be ok.

Never liked Portis since he was a Bronco. Gained a little respect for him with that play and then lost it again during the post-game interview.

Bummer, Portis didn't even want to be out there. Partially seperated is bad news for a running back.

I am in a one keeper fantasy league where my two best players from last year are Carson Palmer and Clinton Portis. I'm screwed. I also had T.O on my team last year but I had to let him go after he got his ass put on suspension. This year is starting out real ty.

Hopefully Portis will have a complete recovery, be healthy, and still suck major ass. I don't like the foreskins, but I don't want anyone to be injured either.

Hacksaw Hamilton said something about Portis might have a partial tear of the rotator cuff.

I hope it's not true. I don't remember anyone landing on him. That would be a pretty freak injury.
