I don't often drive other people's cars, but I may have to next week.

How does insurance work on that? We are both individually insured by the same company. I figure the other person could call and add me temporarily, but I've heard other things so I figured I'd ask here....

It's kind of expensive so insurance is a must...

You friend's insurance should cover it if they have full coverage.

Just don't up and you won't have to worry about anything.

My GEICO insurance covers me as driver, whether I drive my car or a rental car (I decline rental car insurance, on GEICO's advice).

Your insurance policy may cover you driving a car that is not yours.

Yeah I'll certainly be careful, but it's a 100K dollar car so insurance is necessary...

I wouldn't want anyone driving my vehicle without it and it's not a 100K dollar car...

If you hit someone else, and it is your fault, your insurance will pay for the other vehicle while your friends insurance will pay for their vehicle.

So the answer is both will in effect.

    The coverage follows the car.
What ever coverages are on the car in question will be the primary ones used IF anything happens.
You auto coverages would be excess in the event the primary coverages aren't enough to cover what happened.

To make it a little easier to understand... If you (PM5K) hit someone then your (PM5K) insurance would pay for the car you are driving ( your friend's) and the friend's car insurance would pay for the damage to the the vehicle that you (PM5K) hit.
This actually happened to me this summer. I was the one who got hit by someone who was driving another person's vehicle.

Wrong. As another person mentioned, insurance follows the car. If you are driving my car and hit someone, my insurance covers everything. The only time your (you driving my car) insurance will come into play is if my limits are exhausted or I'm underinsured/uninsured.
