I just sold my house yesterday, and the movers we're planning on using is User's F150 4X4.

I've had horrible experiences with movers. But whoever you choose, make sure they are insured ... so they don't break valuable pieces of furniture and then disappear off the face of the planet.

Think about it. Movers are mob guys who weren't competent enough to be legbreakers.

The only good experiences I've had are with those student/small-business "man with van" companies. But those won't get you to Maryland.

The only thing you can do is get an insured one, like SW said. Box as much of your own stuff as possible. Watch THEM as much as possible. And if it's something you really care about, bring it with you, don't ship it.

When I was in middle school (like in 1998) my family moved from down here (San Antonio) to Wisconsin in a hurry with Allied and then about a year later reversed it back to SA with Scoby or something like that. I think. I can ask when I get back from class. They second movers were lovely, but Allied was horrible. They took some of our stuff, stole some of my grandmother's and great grandmother's jewelry and also took our cell phone. Back in the day it wassuper exspensive. They racked up something like a $400 bill call some place on the southside every five minutes for about a month.

We had a good experience with a small team of movers who were (I believe) also part time students. But as mentioned before, that's not likely to get you to Maryland. Check with the BBB for complaints, make sure they are insured and professionals should be willing to give you good references.

That's what we are doing for the big move north. Between the prices we found and the horror stories...its our best bet.

I've been moved twice by professional movers, had no major problems either time. That said, it may have been because my company paid for the moves and they were big suckers that had better lawyers that I or the movers could ever dream of.

Unfortunately I can't remember the firms involved. The advice re insurance, making sure the company is licensed/bonded, packing what you can, being there to observe the process, etc. is all good. Bring your checkbook - it ain't cheap.

A guess a "tweener" option is to look into PODS. You pack a container that is trucked to your home, they pick it up, store it if necessary, deliver it, then you unpack it at your leisure. Of course the longer you have the unit (whether at your place or theirs) the more you pay.

    wow.
I just did a quote from PODS and it was about 1/2 what we were expecting to pay for some college kids/mexicans from the corner + uhaul.

looks liek we will be doing PODS. and I like that we can take our time packing and unpacking. which will be great since it will be June and we have 2 rugrats.

GayABC - when we moved form Ct to TX we used Mayflower movers. Cost a penny but everything arrived perfect, nothign was missing, and they got here on time. I think they belong to a nationwide group so you may want to check them out.

will you load it and drive it to maryland for me?

we did the budget truck thing last year - it was a driving that thing, the truck was very uncomfortable, no seat adjustment, the a/c hardly worked, plus the gas for that

i got a decent quote yesterday from a respectable company for a little over $1,000.00 (i only have about 1,500 lbs)

    this helped as well http://www.movingscam.com/blackList.shtml
