Looking to build on a 60-win season that ended two games shy of an NBA Championship, the Dallas Mavericks signed All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki to a contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

While the team did not disclose terms of the deal, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that it is a three-year extension worth just under $60 million.

"We are glad to keep Dirk in the Mavericks family for many more years," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. "His contribution to our success on and off the court has been immeasurable."

Last season, Nowitzki averaged a career-high 26.6 points per game, along with 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He also established career highs in field goal percentage (48.0), 3-point percentage (40.6) and free throw percentage (90.1).

Nowitzki finished third in MVP voting and was named to the All-NBA First Team for the second straight season. He has also been selected to a Mavericks-record five straight All-Star Games.

Your point? He's still getting paid while your sitting here hating. He doesn't give a about what some spur fan thinks, he's too busy living the good life.

    So was I

In just two short years Dirk will be playing his heart out so someone will have to do better than 3 years/60 million. THAT was stupid, or was it?

Good prediction. We were far off last year, it's pretty obvious we won't win any time soon. Jackass.

And I see nothing wrong with this extension, Dirk is a max player.
He will maybe be overpaid when he will earn $22M in 2010-2011 (he will be 32-33 years old) but so will Duncan in 2009-2010 (he will be 33-34 and will earn $22M) and almost all max player at the end of their last big contract.

Personally, I'm glad they gave him lots of money. Makes signing those free agents next year seem less likely.

The 3 years is in addition to his contract now so that's a total of 5 more years

Good for the Spurs. Now the Mavs are stuck with Terry, Damp and Dirk long term.. no cap flexibilty

07/08 season spurs have only Tim, manu and Tony under contract...Nice

Rookie scale contracts may be extended for up to five seasons beyond the player's last option season, bringing the total contract length to six seasons. All other extensions are limited to five seasons, including the seasons remaining on the current contract. For example, a contract with two seasons remaining may be extended for up to three additional seasons.

Manu and Tim will be washed up by then. Dallas already has all the players they need. No need to add more.
