Editorial board member hit, killed by newspaper’s distribution truck

    October 11, 2006

A member of the Standard-Times editorial advisory board was killed this morning when a truck driven by a newspaper employee struck her as she was on her way to an editorial board meeting.

Judy Niemann, 70, was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Shannon Medical Center, San Angelo police said. The truck’s driver was issued a ticket as a result of the incident, police said late this morning.

According to San Angelo police, Niemann was walking north across Harris Avenue when a Standard-Times distribution truck, driven by newspaper employee Mario Martinez, 42, turned left from Irving Street and struck her.

The incident occurred about 9:20 a.m., and police closed the 0 block of West Harris Avenue between Chadbourne and Irving streets for more than an hour afterward.

Police spokesman Lt. Curtis Milbourn said in a news release that Martinez was cited on a count of failure to yield right of way-left turn.

The editorial board is the Standard-Times’ opinion-generating body comprising the editor, opinion editor and a panel of community volunteers, of which Niemann was one.
