I was going to post something similar a few weeks ago. When traffic on the forum is average (like now) it doesn't matter that much. But during the post season, people's signatures were killing the load time on the forum with 600+ users online.
This is just ridiculous and stupid to have these huge gif files in people's sigs. It's such a watse of bandwidth.
TPark - 4.25 MB
Horry for 3! - 2.61 MB
gospursgojas - 1.27 MB
IX Equilibrium - 0.99 MB
Dex - 0.97 MB
Animated GIF is the most misused file format I've ever seen. Animated GIF cannot ing support a continuous color spectrum as in video. These tiny ass 5 second videos would be 1/10th the size and look a of a lot better if they were compressed with XVid, DiVX, or H.264 (ie, the new Quicktime or the x264 project). GIF relies on having only a few colors and having each of those colors not changing locally. I.e., you pick a black pixel at random and every one of the pixels near to it is the same shade of black.
This is the kind of video animated GIF is designed for:
TrainWreck2100 - 0.06 MB
This is a 13-second video clip, and it's 0.06 MB. Why? Because there's not a lot of colors and and they don't change much. You might say the information content of this video is low.... which is exactly why GIF is a much better format for this video than is DiVX, XViD, H.263, H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or any other format derived from JPEG, which require a continous color spectrum to give good results with high compression.

No one gives a about seeing Jim Edmonds every thread. Why shold I waste 4.5 MB of my bandwidth every time I want to read a thread? I like the pics in the sigs. 10-50 KB is fine. 1-4.5 MB per post is ing ridiculous. It's a huge waste of bandwidth and RAM.
I hate having every thread queueing to load while I'm waiting to download someone's dumb gif.
Isn't there an option if you want to turn off the signatures?
On a 100 KB/s link TPark's sig will take at least 43.5 seconds to load. Horry for 3? 26.7 seconds. That's assuming I'm getting the full speed of the link, which I'm not due to queueing in routers between my computer and the server. So I have to wait 43.5 seconds to open another thread? that.
guy, I can have whatever I want on my sig and post whatever I want
I see Baseline Bum's point. But something else is the point to me. It's the increase on the forum load during busy times. Unless you mean that you want me to turn off everyone's signatures all together.
Either way, people need to get the stuff that's copyrighted out of the signatures anyway. I'd would say that's everybody that's listed above.
NBA photos are okay (that's covered in our Terms of Use). NBA videos are not.
Well if I have to take my video down, I'm going to need someone to make me a cool picture sig of Horry....
The photos in people's sigs are cool and add a lot to the forum. They're not the problem. Most of them are < 50 KB, which is fine. Your animated GIF is also an example of something the format can achieve good compression on since most of the file is concentrated in a very small set of colors, and that's why it only comes in at 37 KB. It's these gifs made from live video that are ridiculous.
I don't mind taking my video down since Kori said she would like it down and she owns this site but I would not take it down for this guy.
In that saying I'm going to get someone to make me a cool sig of horry pictures in one.![]()
I agree, especially considering I'm on dialup. Really, how many times do you need to see the same play over and over before it gets old?
Sucks for you. I am on DSL.
I don't get the argument that they put too much load on the forum. It's not like they're hosted on the forum's server. Also they get cached locally, so you're not downloading them every thread either.
Usually I find them annoying so I guess I'm playing devil's advocate here, but other than the RAM thing these complaints don't make much sense to me.
I do, and thats all that in matters. No one gives a about seeing Jim Edmonds every thread
Sucks for you.. I'm on cable![]()
ha.. nah anyway, the guy has a point though about all those vids. They're just unnecessary for sigs really. I think people need to be a bit more considerate since everyone has different types of internet connections.
All I know is that during the Finals, we had to disable signatures because it was slowing down the server so much. As soon as we did, the server was right back up to speed. I don't know the technical part of it, but it definitely effects the load if everyone is in one the thread (for example the game blog thread) and the signatures are all on.
Either way, I never ed that people had to take them out for that reason. I just said that all copyrighted video needs to get out of people's signatures.
Cable - DSL just about the same . So no doesn't suck for me.
I've had both. Cable is faster.
I'll take mine off soon. I'm trying to see if my friend can make me a Horry picture.
Ehhh. I'll have T1 or T3 soon, so i'll own you then.![]()
Quick question, how many megabytes is my sig?
You guys can be s about it if you want. I never asked you to take them out. But I do feel Baseline has a valid point. So if you get a woody from seeing a 3 second clip or you think it makes you cool or if you simply want to piss off BB, go right on ahead.
Now THAT should be T Park's signature...
Well, people who have dial-up can just turn their signiture option off.
