With certain climate, I'm sure jogging outside is more beneficial.

jogging outside is almost always better. if you have bad joints then a treadmill can be good b/c it gives when you run on it. otherwise the pushing off you get whilst running outdoors is superior than pacing a moving belt.

The key is heart rate as a long time runner. The heart rate monitor was the best tool i ever got. I now use a tread mill 90% of the time for my running my knee's love it. If you get a treadmill motor size matters and treadmills that fold are crap IMO.

You would be suprised how quick time can pass when you are on a treadmill and a basketball, football, or hockey game is on. I find myself wanting to go longer than originally planned just so I can see the end of a quarter, half or a game.

It's not where that matters is how long atleast 20 min and what is your heart rate.

i use a treadmill, every day for an hour a day, then some weight training to keep toned. i love the treadmill, especially if i'm watching an exciting basketball game, i get that thing going sooooo fast while yelling at the tube. i have a knee injury (several on the same knee) so the treadmill is easier on the joints

I dont get it.. why is outdoors more beneficial? If you get your heart rate pumping for x-amount of minutes, the cardiovascular benefits are the same, yes?

It all depends on what you define "beneficial" to mean. I am sure I can find some treadmill maker and he can show me a laundry list of reasons why treadmills are more beneficial than the outdoors, and I am sure I can get the reasons from the other side too. It is all an arguement in semantics.

...did you read my earlier post? i said pushing off the earth is better for you than pacing a belt. it is described some in this article as the "the road does not move beneath you." and that is why my friend. however, you can make up for some of this with incline on the treadmill, but imo, it does not truly make equal.

obviously, with a high incline one can make a treadmill harder than running outside, unless you're on the hills, that is. but all things being equal, outside is better...besides life's short, get out there.

Yes, that thought actually registered with me when I was typing, but you can also say that a sidewalk or road won't throw you backwards into a wall and they stop moving when you do as well. Either way, I am not picking sides, they both have their benefits and drawbacks.

I see your point and understand. My point is you can get the same workout indoors or out. It is heart rate that matters and yes incline is very good. I ran outdoors only hills and all for years. I now use a very high end treadmill that I just love. But to each his own as they say my wife only will run outdoors even in heavy rain.

I think it all depends on your (or the runners) personality. I like the treadmill because I can go to the gym when it isn't crowded and not have people watching me. The treadmill helps my legs, as its been mentioned before too. If I run outside i get self-conscious because I'm a bit ashtmatic. And of course, with time i could kick it.

Funny thing I was at the gym one day running at about 7.8 or so.There has a girl running two mills down who kep on looking over at me. She started going faster and faster then her foot hit the edge and sent her flying. She wasn't hurt but turned bright red and walked out.
