Cowboys won't name head coach until after Super Bowl

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- The Dallas Cowboys won't name Bill Parcells' replacement until after the Super Bowl.
In his first public comments since Parcells retired Jan. 22, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Wednesday he wouldn't have a decision on a new coach until next week. Jones has already interviewed eight candidates, and said he might add to that list.
"We've got a good football team, and I've got to get this right," Jones said. "We've got to make a good decision when we select the next coach. We're going to have the opportunity and a plan in place that will allow us to do that."
Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary, the assistant head coach for the San Francisco 49ers, interviewed Tuesday. That came two days after 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator for two Super Bowl victories and a two-time head coach.
Jason Garrett was hired Thursday for an unspecified role on the coaching staff, likely as offensive coordinator, after he interviewed for the head coaching vacancy. Garrett, who was Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman's backup for two Super Bowl les, is still a candidate for the top job.
Defensive coordinators Wade Phillips of San Diego and Gary Gibbs of New Orleans have also interviewed, as did three of Parcells' assistants.
Jones said he hasn't eliminated any of the candidates from consideration.
"I feel very comfortable with where we are," Jones said. "But if I can, I don't want to leave any stone unturned here."
Parcells went 34-32 and failed to win a playoff game over four seasons.

Why would they be waiting until next week to name their coach? I think it must mean that Jerry might be wanting to hire Rivera. It seems like you got your candidates already unless you are waiting for someone else...like Rivera..or maybe Lovie Smith?
cowboys D needs serious help and he heads one of the most ferocious in the league....still they did stumble towards the end, though not as bad as dallas
Only thing bad about it is that we have to change schemes. Other than that....COME ON DOWN...
well it would make sense for them to wait and announce their head coach after the superbowl if it is riveria.
I think they want him for their defensive coordinator
this would be great. i saw an interview this morning with rivera and he said he hadnt heard from the cowboys yet,but i would love him as a head coach....or even defensive coordinator
Yea I remember reading somewhere that Norv Turner wanted him as the defensive coordinator if was the head coach. The question is would he even consider that? I mean he is already doing that on a super bowl team, why change?
Because Jerry would make him the highest paid D coordinator in the league, and his contract expires after the Super Bowl
His contract does expire and could be signed as head coach by Monday.
However, if the cowboys (or any other team) offer just a lateral def. coor. position, then the bears will have 3 weeks to renegotiate his contract.
Well we know jerry is willing to do that, wasn't zimmer one of the highest paid, if not the highest paid d co in the leauge when he re-upped a few years back?
Either way I think that is the only way they would get him as the D-co but if it came down to getting him as the head coach or not getting him I would much rather have him over Turner.
Singletary is still my first choice.
I don't think that's a bad thing - the Cowboy's personnel is still better suited for a 4-3 IMO, especially if Ellis comes back healthy
I hope it's not Norv. I'd prefer Singletary. Maybe he can knock some sense into our defense and find out where Roy Williams manhood went after the last Eagles game.
rivera made zero adjustments in the indy game. he needs to come correct if he comes.
