It's probably because a ton of the people who vote aren't true fans of the game, and just kind of know who Shaq is. You know?
How does he miss like 3/4 of the season then always despite injury and not playing get the start over someone like Eddy Curry or Dwight Howard who worked their asses off and carry their teams not ride coatails. Sounds like some fans is lost.

I would of voted for Shaq over for Curry, but I voted for Howard on the fan ballot over the rest of the centers. He deserved it.
it is the same reason why ppl vote for yao, kg, tmac, kobe
its because ppl know there names and , star power

yao get it because he has a whole ing country voting for him, and houston. he never actually deserves to start but unless we take the voting rights away from china yao will be starting every year even if he avg. 2 points a game and is on the inactive list for all by 10 games
It boils down to this, Shaq is on TNT and ESPN close to 30 games per year Howard has been on TNT and ESPN maybe for 2 games this season. But yes Howard deserved to be the starter.
Shaq is still unstoppable if you let him catch it on the block, plus he makes the all star game more entertaining by his shenanigans and such. he probly shouldnt start, but he is still good enough to be there
And Yao deserved to be there, dunno what the y'all been watching this past year.
Plus it's a fan vote. Deserves has nothing to do with it.
