Thought we could start the day with some rumors:

Kupchak, of course, is right in the middle of the biggest trade buzz right now. The Lakers were said to be front-runners to acquire Kidd from the Nets, but the trade appears to have stalled over L.A.'s refusal to include 19-year-old center Andrew Bynum in the package. The main reported deal would have sent Bynum, Jordan Farmar, a No. 1 pick and a package of expiring contracts to New Jersey for the All-Star point guard.

Kupchak wouldn't comment on Kidd or any specifics of his team's trade discussions.

However, an Eastern Conference GM said the Lakers were trying to get a third team involved that would enable the Nets to get a package they wanted to make a deal work for Kidd. The Blazers, who have been dangling center Jamaal Magloire and his expiring contract, could be a potential target. The Clippers also were said to be a possibility for Kidd in a straight-up deal involving Corey Maggette and Shaun Livingston, though the same source said L.A. was unwilling to part with Livingston.

    LINK
His name is Mike Bibby, and the Cavs were still hoping to acquire his contract by the NBA trade deadline of 3 p.m. ET Thursday.

League sources report that the Cavaliers spent the early part of Wednesday trying to acquire Bibby in a multi-team deal that would have left Sacramento with power forward Drew Gooden, point guard Marcus Banks (via Phoenix) and the expiring contract of center Scot Pollard, whose $2.2 million comes off the books this summer.

The Kings thought about it for awhile before, said no thanks -- then invited Cleveland to come back with another offer that includes more expiring dollars. I'm speculating here: Gooden, a No. 1 pick and another expiring contract to go with Pollard's.
    LINK
He’s the guy most likely to be traded on the NBA team most likely to make a trade. In other words, the odds are really, really in favor of P.J. Brown being moved before Thursday’s trade deadline, even though as the minutes and hours tick away, there’s more and more uncertainty about what moves Bulls GM John Paxson might make...

Brown, who’s been mentioned in trade rumors involving the Memphis Grizzlies, the Seattle Sonics, and about whom Dallas media has expressed would be a good fit on Mark Cuban’s team, has said time and again that he’s just waiting things out until Thursday.

    LINK
Heading toward the deadline, the Wolves player most often mentioned in speculation nationally had been Mike James, a valuable role player for most of his career but a disappointment as Minnesota's starting point guard after signing a free-agent contract last offseason. James was mentioned in connection with Sacramento, Detroit and Portland, among several teams...

The Wolves would seem to be in the market for a big man, given that they have only two players taller than 6-8. But it always comes down to a match between teams and assets.
    LINK
New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn said Wednesday night that the team is discussing potential trades as the NBA's deadline for deals approaches, but he offered no specifics

Last time I checked we had a few quality big men, and a need for a backup point. Mike James might be a good pickup but I know nothing about his deficiencies.

Granted its from hoopsworld, but a rumor is a rumor.

Kidd To Lakers Done? : The Buzz after the Nets loss tonight, has everyone believing Jason Kidd is being traded to the Lakers. Kidd basically told media that he enjoyed his time in New Jersey and fully expects to be traded by the 3pm trade deadline. It’s not clear which side budged on the deal, but informed sources believe Brian Cook, Kwame Brown and Jordan Farmar are coming to New Jersey. The deal is not expected to be announced until tomorrow.

Vince To Orlando Close? : Despite denials by Magic GM Otis Smith, more than a few league sources say Vince Carter may also be on his way out of New Jersey and that the Magic may have put a deal on the table to nab Vince – the exact package is not clear but it is expected that any deal the Magic make involves Carlos Arroyo, Bo Outlaw and possibly JJ Re . Hedo Turkoglu also makes sense from a salary point of view as well. One informed league sources it would not be surprising to see New Jersey deal Vince for Grant Hill and JJ Re either. The Magic maintained they were not making changes as of mid-day today.

Gasol Staying Put? : Pau Gasol does not seem headed anywhere. League sources say the Grizzlies simply will not move him for lesser pieces and Chicago has soured on the deal entirely. It’s expected the Grizzlies will hold the line on trades, and wait for the off-season to see if the suitors improve.

Kings To Deal Shareef?: While much of the talk today centered around Mike Bibby, more than one league source indicated that the Bulls were close to a deal to acquire Shareef Abdur-Rahim from Sacramento in exchange for PJ Brown. The deal is not quite the splash of nabbing Pau Gasol, but its believed Chicago sees Shareef as enough of a low post weapon to make the deal… More as these stories develop…

Abdur Raheem and Gasol are the same player. Soft outside shooters who can't play defense.

    Trade talk: the final hours
    By Marc Stein
    ESPN.com

The latest dose of trade chatter dribbling in to Stein Line HQ as of 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, just over 12 hours away from NBA's Thursday 3 p.m. trade deadline:
The marquee player most likely to move entering the final hours of trade season, as discussed in this cyberspace Tuesday night, was still Sacramento's Mike Bibby.

Yet there were no indications in the wee hours of Thursday morning that a Bibby-to-Cleveland deal was close, either.

The Cavs remain seriously interested in putting Bibby between LeBron James and Larry Hughes and, according to NBA front-office sources, have been scouring the NBA map to find a third team to help facilitate a deal. Minnesota, Toronto and Phoenix are among the teams that Cleveland has reached out to in hopes of furnishing Sacramento with more cap-friendly contracts it can offer on their own.

    However ...

A three-team scenario in which Cavs power forward Drew Gooden and Minnesota's Mike James would land in Sacramento no longer appears to be an option, but it's believed that neither Cleveland nor Sacramento has abandoned hope of striking a deal before the trade buzzer.

Souces said Sacramento's offer of Bibby to the Dallas Mavericks for young speedster Devin Harris and Austin Croshere's expiring contract was quickly rejected by the Mavs, who won't even consider moving anyone in their main rotation. Dallas believes Harris could be the top defensive point guard in the West, if he's not there already.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The slumping Lakers suffered their sixth straight loss Wednesday night while conceding that their dream of trading for New Jersey's Jason Kidd was all but dead. The issues haven't changed: New Jersey wants Lakers center Andrew Bynum in any Kidd deal and the Lakers won't budge from their stance that the 7-footer, just 19, is an untouchable.

The likelihood of New Jersey parting with Vince Carter is equally slim, according to NBA front-office sources. Carter's ability to become a free agent at season's end is discouraging potential bidders, who fear trading for Carter and losing him in the offseason.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You haven't heard much about Scottie Pippen's proposed comeback since All-Star Weekend ... for a reason. Interested teams, sources say, are waiting until after the trading deadline to see where they are and then decide if they want to give the 41-year-old a meaningful look.

The Lakers, for example, are expected to give Pippen first crack at winning a slot their backcourt rotation -- over potential 10-day contract candidates -- once Kidd is officially unavailable to them.

Cleveland and San Antonio are among the teams that could also decide to give Pippen an audition, given Pip's championship experience and his proven ability to handle the ball and play three or four positions, but the phrase I've heard most in connection to the six-ringed free agent is "due diligence."

Teams are generally skeptical about Pippen making a comeback as a fortysomething, but even contenders who have already ruled out the possibility (like Miami and Dallas) felt obligated to investigate the idea because of Pippen's resume.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Wolves, conceding now that signing James was a mistake after drafting Randy Foye, are working hard to move him before the deadline ... with the Houston Rockets emerging Wednesday as a very plausible destination.

James played on Detroit's 2004 championship team and the Pistons have interest in reacquiring him. The latest signals, however, suggest that the Pistons won't be making a deadline deal.

Houston has also previously employed James and still likes him, according to club insiders, in spite of James' decision to spurn the Rockets in free agency last summer when Minnesota agreed to include an eight-percent trade kicker in his four-year contract.

To trade for James now would almost certainly affect the Rockets' future spending and probably force them to part with the virtually expiring contract of injured guard Bob Sura, who can be bought out next season for $1 million. But I get the feeling they're going to go for it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All signs from Clipperland still point to Corey Maggette remaining a Clipper come Thursday afternoon. I have yet to hear or see tangible evidence that L.A. is interested in Kidd or Carter, as widely speculated. ...

Indications are even stronger out of Seattle that Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis continue to be totally unavailable. Ditto for injured center Robert Swift. ...

The Bulls continue to be linked to Sacramento's Shareef Abdur-Rahim in their search for a low-post score because Chicago's well-chronicled talks with Memphis to acquire Pau Gasol, according to one well-placed source, "aren't even on life support at this point."

Youth ( ) always is good, even coming from Pippen ... I assume we'll need a refrigerator to hang our old boys among games. At this speed I see POP running our offense on court during the playoffs.

AFAIK, Rumors concerning Spurs are :

    - Spurs maybe interested in Pippen.
    - Spurs interested in Maggette. A deal is unlikely.
    - Spurs trying to trade Udrih. Cavs could be interested in him.
    - Spurs can trade a second round pick for Royal Ivey as a result of another deal that is unlikely.
    - Spurs trying to trade Butler. Sixers are interested but teams haven't fing a deal that both teams like.

Well, I think with Bowen not being 100% I really think the Spurs might give Pippen a look. He was a good defender but I am not sure he can still bring it. I could imagine a trade involving Butler/ Barry or and Udrih but no major trade is gonna happen...

It will be interesting to see what other trades will go down.

P.S. Is there a deadline till Pippen needs to be signed? Just curious...

I play cards occasionally with a guy who has a fairly substantial, exec type position with the spurs organization.

He was at our game last night, and the feeling i got from him, although he has very little to do with trading players, is that no moves will likely be made.

I told him i hated the idea, and i dont like going into a playoff run with the roster we have now...He only joked and said the management is counting on them to keel over from old age, so they dont have to worry about what to do with the contracts.

I would not mind having this guy on the Spurs.

    ***************************

Golden State is said to be taking feelers on Mickael Pietrus. Pietrus is having his best year as a Warrior, but his tenure could be coming to a close regardless of whether he is dealt before the deadline.

He will be a restricted free agent at season's end, and among the Warriors' surplus of swingmen, Jason Richardson and Stephen Jackson are locked into long-term contracts while Kelenna Azubuike will be much cheaper to keep.

Pietrus is making $2.5 million this season and figures to command part of a team's mid-level exception (worth about $5 million) in free agency.

Portland is believed to have offered Juan Dixon to no avail, according to a source. For his part, Pietrus says he isn't bothered by the possibility of getting traded from the only NBA team he's played for.

"I'm a veteran," he said. "I've been through rumors and four deadlines already. I just try to stay focused on basketball and what happens, happens. It's not like they're going to trade you to a soccer team. It's basketball."

Pietrus makes $2.5 mil this season. Beno makes $967K this season and $1.7 mil next.
