Are you positive it is a mistake? Is there a stub to it that provides any detail or explanation?
I already know that I'm going to turn the damn thing in.
BUT
Every week for work I have to make an expense report so that I can pay off the Corporate Credit Card. Well, I got the check in the mail today, but behind my expense check was another check made out for almost 4,000 dollars. I see no reason why HEB should be sending me an extra 4k, so I am assuming it is a mistake. It is very tempting to just cash the er, and see what happens.
Damn Conscience.

The check was written out in your name?
Just deposit it and wait and see what happens. If it comes back on you then give it back... If after a year nothing happens, spend it.
Where was this vato when I lost my Wallet back in 1987?
You want my advise?

What would I do?
First things first - cash the check at a convenience store that has a check-cashing service. Yes, they charge 3%, but more often an "additional deposit" of $50 will keep your hands clean.
Next, make a list of anyone and everyone who, in any conceivable way, might have any knowledge of this situation. Have them all killed. Make sure someone loyal to you kills the hitman so he don't sing.
Finally, take your newfound obscene wealth and live a life of luxury on a tropical island which has no extradition treaty with the US. It's a sweet bonus if this island has -fighting and relaxed age of consent laws.
Wait, you said $4,000?
Ah, just turn it in. And you never read any of this.
Go to Vegas put the check on the roulette table bet on black win 8.000.00 turn the check in keep the 4.000.00 end of story.

Take it back. If your accounting department is worth a damn, they'll figure it out very soon. Not worth the risk to lose your job.
deposit it into my offshore account in the bahamas.....bwah hahahaha
Take it back dude. It's the right thing to do. Someone's job could be on the line if you cash that. Maybe, I dont know.
that's a uva big screen tv you could get with that check...
Be careful- if they find it and you deposited / cashed it and it wasn't yours, you will be liable for the $4k, and they will take it out of your pay if it's not returned quickly.
I'm gonna return the damn thing first thing Monday. 4k isn't enough to lose my job over.
