For one Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student, it was quite a trip.
English and philosophy major Sarah Newton, 21, returned from a January visit to Jamaica as Miss High Times 2007, and now graces the cover of the May issue of cannabis-promoting magazine High Times.
Newton, chosen for the le at the end of the publication trip, said she looks forward to using the le as a chance to speak her mind — which she already does with ease.
"I know my goals are way beyond what (the magazine has) planned for me," Newton said Wednesday. She won the le after the first Miss High Times Pageant, and will appear live April 20 on the Howard Stern Show.
The Houston-native was inspired to enter the compe ion in January 2006, after thumbing through an issue with a scantily-clad model on the cover.
"She didn’t even have a shirt on; she just had a fake marijuana leaf covering her nipples," Newton said. "She had nothing in-depth to say. I didn’t think that’s what the magazine should be representing."
Newton, an advocate of marijuana legalization, sent in application materials and was invited to take part in the contest-trip, which she said was more of a bonding experience than compe ion with the six other contestants.
"We really hung out, and smoked more than we competed," she said. "The first day we all went on stage and said hi. We had several High Times judges evaluating us throughout the week."
Newton is taking 15 hours of classes at A&M-Corpus Christi this semester. She said most of her professors have worked with her to help her make up classes and assignments missed because of her work with the magazine.
"People have been pretty accepting of it," she said. "A lot of people think it’s really cool."
Newton said since she won the le, her myspace.com profile page now receives between 100 to 150 messages every day. She said she takes the time to answer most of them.
"If someone just messages me to be like, ‘Hey, you’re hot,’ then I don’t respond," she said. "But I respond to people who tell me they appreciate what I’m doing."
Newton — who turned 21 on April 2 — said she has smoked marijuana since she was a teenager, and it has helped rid her of sleep deprivation.
Upon graduating, she plans to teach overseas and write. She is currently working on a project about how marijuana has influenced her life.
"I love the opportunity to get to talk to people and inspire people — just to let people know that they don't have to be anything but themselves," she said.
SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
she's hot, but as method man once said
" the pussy--gimmie the money and the weed"
funny on two levels
I heard that next up, she will be named Miss Frito Lay 2008.

I love the ganja, but I hate hippies, quite the conundrum
I feel the same way.
the hippie.
Conundrum solved.
Unless that is were the ganj supply comes from, cheap and good, but is it worth having to sweat in a stinkbox trailerhome and talk about politics with a dread head?
I said " the hippee," not "Relationship the hippie."
She's probably torn up pretty bad
You all must be high. She ain't all that.
I want to see the one with the pot leaf on her nipple.
