4th street cafe.....
I just started a new job and I work downtown near Broadway and McCollough.
Sometimes I don't feel like making a lunch to take with me.I would like to know what's good to eat in the area that I can get and be back in 1 hour.
Any helpful suggestions?
It might be Jerry's, I forget the name, but there's a great Chicago Hot Dog place on commerce. Authentic stuff, they fly the ingredients in from Chicago. Also has italian beefs, etc.
I lived off it when I was on Jury Duty. mmmmmmm
Yeah, that's Jerry's.
Dude moved here in 1997 from Chicago, started his restaurant a few months later and makes everything himself, with help from his wife. They are truly authentic, as is almost everything else on the menu.
As someone with a family basically from Chicago and visits at least once a year, I can tell anyone who doubts it that it is indeed the real thing. I've heard he's a white sox fan, but I can ignore that because he makes great food, and he has more Cubs stuff on his walls.
There's a pretty good Vietnamese place if you follow McCullough north a little past Metropolitan Methodist, it's on the right. There's also a really good Greek place called Demos at Ashby and N St Marys.
Go down S. Alamo. Many places there.
Ain't found a way to kill me yet... eyes burn with sting and sweat.......
I'm at Sunset Station (actually St. Paul Square). Here are a few eateries from Alamo St./St. Mary's all the way up to Mulberry/Broadway area (these are the ones that popped into my head:
Mexican
Taco Haven (Presa st.) - funky mom and pop
Rosario's (alamo/ st. Mary's) - pricier than TH
Lula's (Travis St.) - mom & pop
Adrian's (Brooklyn) - mom & pop
Chula's (Mcullough) - funky mom & pop
Aldaco's (Sunset Station) - like Rosario's
El Mirador (St. mary's) - like Rosario's and Aldaco's
Asian (not a big selection)
Saigon Express (McCullough) - great Bun and Pho
China Latina (S. Alamo st) - standard combos and sushi
Sandwich places
Delivery Market (S. Alamo st.)
Sip (St. Mary's Houston) - panini
Murphy's Deli (Houston/Soledad) - more of a std. deli
Madhatter's (Beauregard/ S. Alamo) - kind of arty but good
WD Deli (Broadway) - same ad MH
Burgers, chicken fried steak, etc.
Sam's Burger Jt. (Broadway)
Good Time Charlies (Broadway)
The Lord's Kitchen - Heavenly Burgers (Carson St., I think) - you'll want to nap after lunch
I still go to most of theses places. Stay away from the Mexican Manhattan and Foccacio's.
Provecho!![]()
