I'm being harrassed and threatened by some tenants I had to evict from one of my properties and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a simple device I can plug into my phone/fax or answering machine to record a phone call. I have to go to bed, but I'll be back in the morning. Hope someone has some ideas.

Yep. Radio Shack has a good device that you can hook into any recorder.

This is what I use on my phone at work to record interviews and such. You hook it up between your headset and receiver, plug the mic input into your standard audio input on your recording device and just hit record.

Oh, awesome. That was easy. I just hook it into the answering machine? Well, I guess I'll go to Radhio Shack tomorrow and find out. Thanks for the quick reply. Okay, I have to go to bed now, for real.

Should be (and if you're still in SM), that RS by Target is where I bought my first one of these.

Texas is a one party notification state, meaning the other party doesn't need to be notified that they are being recorded, unless the other party is in a different state, then other laws may apply...

I don't own any of them, but I manage 4 small complexes. I have a couple complexes downtown in the historic district and some homes and condos near campus.

I would still notify the other party that they may be being taped. why risk a lawsuit?

I'm renting out a house next month. I'm really looking forward to these types of calls.

Not to worry. In the 5 years I've been doing this, this is the first time I've ever dealt with someone like this. Most people are good tenants, and when they're not they leave quietly. Oddly, everyone I've had to evict until now has thanked me for being so understanding and left the place really clean. I know, it's weird. The best way to avoid a situation like this is to join NTN and run a credit check. I didn't run a check on these particular people because they sublet the place from a guy who needed to move. I figured the worst that could happen is they could be bad tenants for a few months while they finished his lease through the end of July. Wow! We didn't even make it half way there.

What's amazing is how stupid people are. When you say " I have to notify you that I may be taping this and all future conversations we have have for legal reasons" they think it's BS. Sometimes they back off for about 5 minutes then they forget and go on like before. My ex-husband was like that. Occasionally telling him I was taping a call would make him act even more assholish on the telephone.
Just remember to get a system that is easy to turn off when you receive calls from other people. You don't want the tape running out when you need it because it recorded all your other conversations.

I kind of think these are the type of people who would forget 30 seconds into our call that they were being recorded.

Isn't it unlawful to make threats over the phone?

If you say you are being recorded they will probably not call again and you will never find out who it really is.

    Wouldn't caller ID help too?

I know who it is. They're not trying to hide their iden y. And I called the police and they did nothing. They didn't even take a written report. He told me it's a civil matter and I could file a restrainer order through the city prosecutor if I wanted to. Besides threatening to come to my house and beat me up, they're making up a bunch of crap about what I've said and how I've treated them, so recording their psychotic behavior on the phone I think will help our case when we take them to court to make them pay their rent.

Funny. Same thing has been happening to me around every night at 11PM. Never put your number on Myspace. It really shows how some losers have no life.

Psh, no. It's a high school thing. I put my cell phone number on a friend's comment, because she said she wouldn't lose it then. And of course someone wrote the ing thing down and keeps calling me every night with this creepy voice. But I can't complain because it's my fault, so I just have to turn my phone off at night.
