NRA is -all about "right to bear arms" and "self defense", and is really all about gun sales and $$$.

Tougher gun show controls in California slash sales of weapons linked to crime

California has succeeded in drastically reducing anonymous and undo ented gun sales and sales of military-style weapons by introducing tighter controls to gun shows reveals a study in the June issue of Injury Prevention.

Eight gun shows in California and 20 shows in Arizona, Nevada, Texas and Florida were monitored. These states are major outside sources for guns used in crime in California.

California is unique in regulating these events and prohibiting undo ented sales between private parties. Promoters must be licensed and gun transactions must be processed by a licensed retailer, a background check conducted and a record kept.

( sounds reasonable, dudnit? I'm sure the NRA and the National Assoc of Gun Traffickers is VIOLENTLY agains the CA rules and them spreading to other states )
California has also banned sales of .50 BMG calibre rifles and handguns which have failed basic safety tests plus restricted sales of some military-style assault weapons. Also attendees who bring guns to sell must affix a tag to the gun recording identifying information.

Armed attendees were more than five times as common in states outside of California. No direct sales of firearms between attendees were seen in California. In other states, such undo ented gun sales appeared to be as common as sales by licensed gun dealers. And illegal ‘straw purchases’, in which buyers buy guns for parties other than themselves were 6.6 times more common in the other states. In three ‘straw purchases’ outside of California, the buyer bought multiple guns.

Vendors in states outside California were 2.5 times more likely to sell assault weapons and all sellers of assault-type handgun and fully automatic weapons were in other states

Professor Barry Pless, editor of Injury Prevention, said he felt compelled to include the paper immediately following the deaths of 32 people in a shooting incident at Virginia Tech University in April.

He writes: ‘This study represents a small but critical step towards truly effective gun control in a country where the culture of guns verges on the incomprehensible.

‘Although there is no evidence that the deranged shooter obtained his guns from a gun show, the implications for prevention seem evident.

‘They reveal the greatly increased risks of deadly weapons being sold at shows in states that lack California’s regulations.

‘Even in the US it seems odd to permit undo ented gun sales while fussing about undo ented immigrants.’

Gun shows are an important source of weapons for crimes used in the US, Canada and Mexico. In 2005, guns were involved in almost 430,000 violent crimes in the US, including 10,100 homicides.

I'm not even a "gun guy", but the above quote helps to once again prove that Boutons is the biggest jackass on this site.

100% of gun-related deaths involve guns.

guns don't kill people, tiny pieces of metal do

Here's the NRA's dirty little secret: they want the criminals to have guns. Number one, that makes them customers, and number two, that makes YOU customers.

Congress protecting the gun mfrs and dealers from prosecutions:

    June 17, 2007
    Editorial

    Why Protect Shady Gun Dealers?

It should not require the shedding of innocent blood to shame Congress into showing the spine to take on the gun lobby, but that seems like a good description of the sorry state of affairs on Capitol Hill.

Lawmakers appear to be on their way to fixing one glaring flaw in the law-enforcement system as a direct response to the massacre at Virginia Tech. But another change that is vital to public safety is facing heated resistance from opponents of gun control who seem to have trouble drawing a line between the right to bear arms and using them in crimes and selling them to criminals.

Last week, the House approved a measure to fix flaws in the system of background checks for gun buyers — flaws that allowed the Virginia Tech shooter to purchase firearms despite a history of mental health problems that should have disqualified him. It appears the Senate will soon follow suit.

The bill would provide money to states to update the national database that gun dealers use to screen prospective buyers, adding more criminal records and mental health information. This advance for public safety was the product of weeks of negotiations between senior Congressional Democrats and the National Rifle Association.

But it does not seem that this newfound interest in sharing information extends to giving the police and local governments access to urgently needed information about guns used in crimes. That problem faces a tense showdown in coming days in the House Appropriations Committee when it takes up a spending bill that includes the Justice Department.

At issue is a pernicious gift to the gun lobby known as the Tiahrt amendment, after Representative Todd Tiahrt, the Kansas Republican who attached it to the spending measure in 2003. It limits the ability of federal officials to release data showing the path from manufacture to retail purchase of a gun that was recovered in a crime. Representative Patrick Kennedy, Democrat of Rhode Island, and Representative Mark Kirk, Republican of Illinois, are expected to seek its repeal.

Supporters of the Tiahrt amendment contend, unpersuasively, that broader release of the dealer information would jeopardize investigations. The amendment’s real intent was to impede cities from pursuing lawsuits against gun manufacturers for irresponsible marketing practices. The main result, notes Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, has been to make it harder to fight gun violence across jurisdictional lines. The Tiahrt amendment hinders the ability of the police and localities to see how guns move through their communities, and to act against the relatively small handful of gun dealers responsible for selling a majority of the guns used in crime.

Mr. Bloomberg has become an object of vilification by gun-rights zealots for running sting operations against out-of-state dealers whose guns have been linked to crimes in New York, filing successful lawsuits, and rallying mayors and law-enforcement leaders against the Tiahrt amendment. These efforts pose no threat to law-abiding gun owners, dealers and manufacturers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she will oppose the Tiahrt amendment. Lawmakers in favor of preserving the absurd restrictions have a duty to explain why they are more interested in protecting rogue gun dealers than in protecting the public.

Congress protecting the gun mfrs and dealers from prosecutions:
    etc. etc...

I have been hearing about unethical, maybe illegal stings being performed by New York law enforcements into other states trying to put law abiding gun dealers out of business. I may be wrong, but I believe this is a reaction to the ordeal.

The New York Times article clearly misleads the reader. The Tiahrt amendment states that "In FY ’03,’04,’05, ’06 and ‘07 the Committee included language to prevent ATF from disclosing unredacted firearm trace data and multiple handgun purchase data."

There are several reasons about this amendment requiring the redacting of information. People should do research before trusting anything that comes from the NY Times.

... Boutons wasn't even willing to tell us the source for that reason I bet.

    Notice I said "heard!"

Not a problem however. I never looked for them till now, because I have a pretty good filter in my head for the truth of what I hear on talk radio. A quick search prompted the following links and more:

OK, let's see how the Repugs' political henchmen in ATF, all beholden to their NRA owners, can make this stand up in court.
